Understanding the NCLEX

The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) is a computer-adaptive exam designed to determine whether a candidate is prepared to provide safe, entry-level nursing care. The exam includes a minimum of 85 and a maximum of 150  items and may take up to 5 hours to complete, depending on pacing.

The NCLEX includes a range of question types. While many students are familiar with multiple-choice and select-all-that-apply (SATA) items, the exam has evolved to include Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) item types. These often appear in case-based formats that require students to evaluate patient scenarios and make decisions as information unfolds.

Understanding the structure of the exam—and the types of questions you may encounter—is an essential first step. Success requires more than content knowledge; it requires the ability to apply knowledge using sound clinical reasoning.

NCLEX Client Care Categories and Clinical Judgment

The NCLEX evaluates performance across multiple client care categories, representing key areas of nursing practice. These categories ensure that new nurses are prepared to deliver safe and effective care across diverse clinical situations.

Students are more likely to succeed on their first attempt when they demonstrate consistent performance across these categories—not just overall, but within each area.

In recent years, the NCLEX has placed greater emphasis on clinical judgment. Through NGN case studies, students must analyze patient information, prioritize care, and evaluate outcomes step by step.

This reflects an important shift: success on NCLEX is not just about knowing the correct answer, but about thinking like a nurse.

Our Recipe for NCLEX Success

Virtual ATI (VATI) and Green Light

At ¹ú²úÖ÷²¥, we use a structured and supportive approach to help students stay focused and prepared. A key component of this approach is our partnership with ATI through the Virtual ATI (VATI) program.

VATI is an online, comprehensive review that helps students identify knowledge gaps and strengthen weak areas. It is included for all students at no additional cost, eliminating the need to search for or purchase external review programs. Instead of guessing what to study, students are guided toward the content that matters most.

As students progress, they work toward earning a “Green Light,� which indicates readiness for the NCLEX. Students who achieve Green Light status and test within two weeks have achieved a first-time pass rate of approximately 98 percent.

This structured pathway promotes focus, builds confidence, and ensures students are fully prepared for exam day.

Campus Support System

¹ú²úÖ÷²¥ students are supported by a dedicated team throughout their NCLEX preparation.

Each campus has Nursing Academic Specialists (NAS) who monitor student progress and provide individualized guidance. They identify early signs of struggle and intervene proactively to keep students on track.

Program Assistants also support students by guiding them through the NCLEX application process and ensuring all requirements are completed accurately and on time.

Support from the NAS team includes:

• Individualized coaching for areas needing improvement
• Test-taking strategy workshops
• Support for test anxiety and confidence building

This comprehensive support system eliminates guesswork and ensures that students receive clear, consistent guidance all the way through test day.

Practice Questions and Test Banks

BoardVitals

Consistent practice is a critical component of NCLEX success. ¹ú²úÖ÷²¥ provides access to BoardVitals, a test bank with over 4,000 NCLEX-style questions written at an appropriate level of difficulty.

BoardVitals includes a computer-adaptive testing (CAT) mode that mirrors the NCLEX experience by adjusting question difficulty based on performance. It also offers an interface that closely resembles the actual testing environment.

These features reduce uncertainty, improve familiarity, and help students build confidence before exam day.

Learning Systems

Students also have access to ATI Learning Systems and Dynamic Quizzes, which include more than 3,500 additional practice questions.

These tools are designed to reinforce content mastery while developing NCLEX-style critical thinking. Students can track performance, identify weak areas, and focus their study efforts accordingly.

Pharmacology is often one of the most challenging areas for nursing students due to the volume and complexity of information.

To support this, students use Pharmacology Made Easy, a resource that simplifies medication review into concise, high-yield content. It includes:

• Clear, streamlined PDF summaries of essential medication information
• Flashcard-style formats for quick, focused review
• Emphasis on key concepts most relevant to NCLEX success

By breaking down complex material into manageable segments, this resource helps students retain critical information and approach pharmacology questions with greater confidence.

Using AI the Right Way

AI is becoming an increasingly common study tool. When used appropriately, it can enhance learning. However, not all AI tools rely on accurate or NCLEX-aligned sources.

At ¹ú²úÖ÷²¥, students have access to Engage, an AI-integrated platform designed specifically for nursing education. Within Engage, Clare AI provides targeted support using vetted, reliable nursing content aligned with NCLEX standards.

Clare AI supports diverse learning styles by helping students:
