What Is the Hardest Class in Nursing School?

The hardest class in nursing school usually isn鈥檛 the same for everyone. While one student may struggle with pharmacology, another may find medical-surgical nursing to be the toughest. Not every course will feel easy, but there are ways you can manage the courseload and get help when you鈥檙e feeling frustrated or overwhelmed.

In this article, we鈥檒l discuss some nursing classes that students often find difficult and offer helpful tips for getting through them.

What Is the Hardest Class in Nursing School?

If you ask 10 nurses about the hardest class they took in nursing school, there鈥檚 a chance you may get 10 different answers. The truth is, no course challenges every nursing student the same way. Some students may struggle with pathophysiology, for example, while others consider it their favorite class.

Many factors can affect how difficult you find a nursing course to be. These include your strengths and interests, academic background, instructors, and study habits. All of these can play a role in which courses challenge you and how you handle them.

Throughout your nursing education, the classes you find difficult may also change. In your first year, you may need to adjust to the pace of nursing school. Later, you may need to remember those foundational concepts and apply them to more complex situations.

While there鈥檚 no course that鈥檚 objectively harder or easier than others, these are some classes that nursing students may find challenging:

Pharmacology

Pharmacology centers on the study of medications and how they affect the body. At 国产主播, the covers drug classifications, delivery methods, administration of treatments, and interactions with other medications, foods, or therapies.

You may find this course challenging if you struggle to recall or memorize information. In pharmacology, you will learn many drug names and classes, as well as the uses and potential side effects of different medications.

After graduating, some WCU alumni say pharmacology was one of the hardest courses they took in nursing school. Kaley W., a WCU鈥揟exas alumna who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), says the course made her early days of nursing school feel especially challenging.

鈥淭he beginning of my schooling was fraught with difficulties as I struggled in pharmacology and ultimately had to retake the class,鈥 she said. However, Kaley overcame those early struggles and achieved her dream of becoming a nurse.

鈥淚 am proud of myself for making it through nursing school despite many curveballs that were thrown my way,鈥 she said.

Medical-Surgical Nursing

Medical-surgical nursing focuses on how to care for adult patients with a wide range of medical needs. WCU鈥檚 Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and BSN programs both include 3 levels of medical-surgical nursing classes and corresponding practicums.

In these courses, nursing students learn about therapeutic nursing care, patient advocacy, care management, communication, and community healthcare issues. They also get to apply what they鈥檝e learned in real-world healthcare settings.

These courses may feel difficult because they cover many health conditions and types of care. You鈥檒l learn how to recognize symptoms, understand what they may mean, and use that information to help plan treatments and nursing care.

Pathophysiology

Pathophysiology focuses on how a disease or injury can change the body. In WCU鈥檚 , students learn about acute and chronic responses to disruptions of major body systems, including physical and chemical changes.

This course builds on concepts you learn in anatomy, physiology, and chemistry. If you find those courses difficult, you may also need extra study time for pathophysiology. It teaches you how diseases can affect the body, what symptoms they cause, and what those changes may mean for patient care.

Tips for Succeeding in Hard Nursing Classes

While some nursing courses may be difficult, there are a few things you can do to make those classes feel more manageable. Follow these tips for handling a tough class in nursing school:

  • Ask for help. If you鈥檙e struggling to understand concepts in class, ask for help early. Tell an instructor or tutor where you need help and discuss specific questions you have about the material.
  • Study consistently. Make time to study every day, focusing on areas you have trouble understanding. Break the material into smaller sections and prioritize one topic at a time so you don鈥檛 get overwhelmed.
  • Find a study partner or group. Studying with a classmate or a group can give you the chance to ask questions when you don鈥檛 understand something. A study group can also keep you accountable and offer encouragement when you may feel like giving up.
  • Use resources available to you. Many nursing programs offer resources for students, such as tutoring, academic advising, and library services. Use those resources to get the support you need when classes feel tough.

At 国产主播, nursing students often find support through faculty, tutoring services, and academic resources. The Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) program, a peer-led support group, has made a difference for many nursing students, including Shelby L., a WCU鈥揕os Angeles BSN graduate.

鈥淚 would recommend PALS tutoring for anyone struggling with any class because it鈥檚 led by someone who has just gone through this,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey understand the instructors, they understand the exams, they understand the material.鈥

Other WCU alumni have leaned on faculty and fellow classmates to help them through difficult classes. Ryan P., another WCU鈥揕os Angeles BSN alumnus, says finding that support is essential for making it through nursing school.

鈥淢ake friends at school 鈥 don鈥檛 think you鈥檙e going to do it by yourself,鈥 Ryan said. 鈥淢ake friends with your peers, your colleagues, your instructors. That team environment? That鈥檚 what nursing is all about.鈥
