1. Co-Curricular and Wellness Support
WCU recognizes the importance of holistic student development, which is why a number of co-curricular resources are available to help you succeed. These offerings are designed to support your academic, physical, and emotional well-being:
- Student Assistance Program (SAP): Provided through Aetna, this program offers counseling services and resources to support your mental health and well-being. It’s confidential, free, and available to all WCU students.Â
- LA Fitness Discount: All students receive discounted rates for LA Fitness memberships. Staying active is a great way to manage stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout your college journey.Â
- Tutor.com: Sometimes, students need a little extra help outside the classroom. That’s where Tutor.com comes in! This online tutoring resource is available to all students, giving you access to personalized academic support whenever you need it.Â
- Library Support Services (ARC): The Academic Resource Center (ARC) provides academic support in the form of research help, study sessions, and more. The library staff is always there to ensure you have the tools and resources to succeed in your studies.Â
- Disability and Accommodations Support: WCU is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for students living with a disability. The university is dedicated to ensuring all students have equal access to education.Â
2. Student Advisor and Personalized Guidance
Every student at WCU is paired with a Student Advisor who will guide you throughout your academic journey. Your advisor is there to assist with everything from choosing courses to managing your workload. You’ll have the opportunity to attend workshops on topics like Time Management and Study Skills, or even schedule one-on-one advisement meetings to discuss your progress and any additional resources that might support your learning.
3. FHE 100 – Foundations of Higher Education
As part of your academic preparation, all undergraduate students are required to take FHE 100 – Foundations of Higher Education. This course is designed to familiarize students with university life, help them navigate academic challenges, and provide valuable insights on time management, study habits, and other skills essential for success in higher education. This course will help set the foundation for a successful journey at WCU.
4. Onboarding Process: What to Expect
When you begin your studies at WCU, you’ll participate in a thorough onboarding process to ensure you’re fully equipped with all the information you need. Here’s what you can expect during your Reg and Tech Day and New Student Orientation:
- Student Portal Navigation: You’ll learn how to navigate your Student Portal, where you can manage your personal information, track your academic progress, review your financial aid package, and more. This includes understanding your degree audit, grades, and transfer credits, as well as ordering textbooks through the Virtual Bookstore.Â
- FERPA and Scholarships: You’ll be introduced to FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), and it will be explained to you how to complete the form if you haven’t already. Additionally, you’ll learn how to access available scholarships and keep track of your financial aid documents.Â
- Important Apps: You’ll get familiar with a variety of essential WCU apps, including the WCU Mobile app, WCU Career Navigator, Remind, OneDrive, Microsoft Active Sync Email, and LiveSafe for campus safety.Â
- Books and Access Codes: The Virtual Bookstore is your go-to for purchasing required textbooks by term. Some books may require an access code — make sure to purchase it on time for uninterrupted access to course materials.Â
- New Student Orientation Handouts: During orientation, you’ll receive helpful handouts, such as information about the Aetna Student Assistance Program, PAL Tutors, the Dress Code Policy, and community resources available in Miami and Broward.Â
5. Time Management and Study Skills Workshops
To help you transition into college life, WCU offers a Time Management Workshop as part of your FHE 100 course. In addition to time management, you’ll learn valuable study techniques that will help you stay organized and on top of your coursework. These workshops are tailored to help you develop essential skills that will serve you throughout your college experience and beyond.
