After years in law enforcement, Joseph C. made a life-altering decision: to trade his police badge for a stethoscope. Now a proud graduate of 国产主播-Miami and a pediatric oncology nurse at Nicklaus Children鈥檚 Hospital, Joseph鈥檚 path to nursing was one shaped by family, purpose, and a relentless drive to help others 鈥 especially children.

鈥淎ll of my family is in nursing,鈥 Joseph stated. 鈥淢y sister-in-laws, my niece鈥 they actually loved the fact that I was going into it. Kept it in the family.鈥

While his family supported his career pivot, Joseph鈥檚 real inspiration stemmed from a deep personal passion for pediatrics. Though initially unsure if he’d end up in pediatric care, fate steered him back to his original calling. 鈥淚鈥檓 currently working on hematology oncology for pediatrics,鈥 he said. 鈥淛ust something about being able to see a child that鈥檚 in desperate need… to still be as happy as they are 鈥 it鈥檚 my drive.鈥

As a single father, Joseph鈥檚 journey took on even greater meaning. 鈥淚 have a 4-year-old boy. That鈥檚 my best friend in the world,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 did everything that I did just for him. Sacrifices were hard… but it was all worth it.鈥

For Joseph, nursing is more than just a profession 鈥 it鈥檚 a means of building a stable life for his son. 鈥淚t gives us a home, a routine, and a future,鈥 he explained. 鈥淚 wanted him to see his dad do something that matters. Something that gives back.鈥

The path wasn鈥檛 easy. Joseph openly admitted to struggling with imposter syndrome and doubts throughout nursing school. 鈥淓very day,鈥 he recalled. 鈥淏ut something that I learned鈥 the professors really do prepare you. On your low days, they encourage you. On your high days, they challenge you.鈥

国产主播鈥檚 accelerated program and personal attention played a pivotal role in his success. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e getting everything you pay for,鈥 he said. 鈥淪mall class sizes, personal relationships with professors 鈥 they all know you by name. That was honestly my favorite part.鈥

Now, just weeks into his role at his dream hospital, Joseph has no doubts he鈥檚 right where he belongs. 鈥淚t鈥檚 cool being part of it 鈥 to know that you鈥檙e kind of like that glimmer of hope for them,鈥 he said. 鈥淓ven if it鈥檚 bad news, I know that for those 12 hours, I can make that moment better.鈥

Beyond the Bedside: 9 Non-Bedside Nursing Careers You Can Pursue With a BSN

Looking to earn your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) but not sure if traditional bedside care is the path for you? You’re not alone and there are, in fact, a variety of rewarding non-bedside nursing career options.

Many nursing students and practicing RNs find that while they love healthcare, they鈥檙e drawn to roles that don鈥檛 involve direct, hands-on patient care. Whether you’re looking for a different pace, reduced physical demands, or a way to apply your clinical expertise in new settings, a BSN can open the door to a range of meaningful, non-bedside nursing careers.

Keep reading if you’re curious about where your BSN degree can take you beyond traditional patient care roles.

What Are Non-Bedside Nursing Careers?

Non-bedside nursing jobs are roles that allow you to leverage your clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and healthcare experience without providing direct patient care. These careers span fields like education, informatics, writing, legal consulting, and health technology. While they may be lesser known than bedside nurses, these roles are equally important in the healthcare field.

These roles can offer flexibility and stability 鈥 with some offering the ability to work remotely 鈥 making them a great option for those just starting out or making a career pivot.

9 Non-Bedside Nursing Careers You Can Pursue With a BSN

The following careers allow you to put your BSN to work in non-clinical settings. Some may require additional certifications or experience, but many are accessible with a BSN and a nursing license.

1. Nurse Educator

Do you enjoy mentoring others or breaking down complex topics into simple concepts? You may want to consider becoming a nurse educator. These professionals teach in academic programs, train new nurses during clinical rotations, or lead professional development programs at healthcare facilities.

If this path sounds interesting to you, 奥颁鲍鈥檚 online MSN – Nurse Educator program helps you build on your knowledge and step into the classroom with confidence in as little as 16 months.

2. Healthcare Writer

If writing is one of your strong suits, working as a healthcare writer may be the right fit for you. Not to mention, is a growing area recognized by the CDC as key to public health outcomes.

As a healthcare writer, you鈥檒l be tasked with creating educational content for patients, providers, or the public. That might include blog articles, continuing education modules, patient handouts, or health-related news. This career offers the flexibility to work remotely and the opportunity to build a portfolio that informs and empowers others using your nursing expertise.

3. Nurse Researcher

design and conduct studies that improve patient care, healthcare delivery, and nursing practices. While many roles are based in hospitals, research institutes, or universities, these positions typically focus on data collection, study design, and analysis. With a BSN, you may qualify for research coordinator roles or work on teams that publish findings to advance healthcare science.

4. Legal Nurse Consultant

work alongside attorneys to provide expert insight into medical cases. This might include reviewing medical records, preparing case summaries, or offering expert testimony. Your clinical background can give you credibility in identifying standards of care, spotting documentation inconsistencies, and explaining complex medical scenarios in legal terms. For nurses with analytical skills and an interest in law, this can be a rewarding pivot.

5. Nurse Administrator

Nurse administrators oversee the business and operational side of healthcare. This might include managing budgets, staffing schedules, and policy compliance for departments or entire facilities. Though they鈥檙e rooted in healthcare, typically don鈥檛 provide patient care themselves. Instead, they focus on supporting nursing teams, improving efficiency, and ensuring high-quality care through leadership.

奥颁鲍鈥檚 Nurse Leader specialization (offered through our RN to MSN, MSN, and Post-Master鈥檚 Certificate programs) can help you take the next step if leadership is your goal.

6. Health Coach

guide individuals through wellness journeys by offering support with nutrition, fitness, stress management, and chronic disease prevention. If you’re passionate about helping others build healthy habits, this role combines personal connection with long-term impact.

Your clinical background allows you to provide evidence-based recommendations and tailor coaching to each client鈥檚 health needs.

7. Medical Sales Representative

serve as liaisons between medical product companies and healthcare providers. Whether you’re selling pharmaceuticals, equipment, or devices, your nursing background helps you communicate product benefits in a way providers understand. This career often comes with travel opportunities, and many nurses find it to be a dynamic alternative to clinical roles.

8. Utilization Management Nurse

assess medical records to determine whether treatments and services meet insurance criteria for medical necessity. These nurses often work for insurance companies or hospitals in office or remote settings. This analytical role is ideal for detail-oriented nurses who enjoy reviewing documentation, applying clinical guidelines, and ensuring efficient use of healthcare resources. Becoming a utilization management nurse allows you to leverage your BSN knowledge without stepping onto a unit.

9. Nurse Informaticist

Nurse informaticists (part of the broader field of ) blend nursing knowledge with data and technology to improve healthcare systems. They often work with electronic health records (EHRs), develop clinical workflows, and help implement tech solutions that make healthcare safer and more efficient.

If you’re tech-savvy and passionate about systems improvement, healthcare informatics can offer a future-facing career path rooted in healthcare innovation.

Start Your Non-Bedside Nursing Journey With a BSN

For natural leaders, educators at heart, or individuals looking to reduce the physical demands of patient-facing nursing, there are plenty of non-bedside roles that may offer exactly what you’re looking for. A BSN is an excellent starting point.

奥颁鲍鈥檚 Bachelor of Science in Nursing program helps equip students with a foundation in clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and hands-on experience. Juleen F. didn鈥檛 begin her career in nursing. In fact, she spent a dozen years behind the scenes in healthcare, working as a medical laboratory technician. But it was during one unexpected experience in the field that her path shifted.

鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 until I started doing bone marrow biopsies at Jackson where I connected more with the patients that I became more in touch with my human side,鈥 Juleen said. 鈥淭hen I realized, hey, I can do this. I can connect with people.鈥

With that spark, Juleen enrolled at 国产主播-Miami and began pursuing her nursing degree, a journey she completed in the summer of 2024.

鈥淲hen I came to West Coast, it was already settled that I wanted to become a nurse,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hat I appreciated was that the anatomy and physiology I took here was specific for nursing. It helped a lot. I鈥檓 a new ICU nurse now 鈥 all my cranial nerves, I learned them in depth here.鈥

The nursing-focused curriculum, she said, stood out from her past academic experience. From anatomy to math and even English classes, everything was structured to support future nurses.

鈥淎ll the classes were structured for nurses,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he math was based on nursing skills, med math, calculations. The English classes 鈥 all the papers were on nursing topics. Even the anatomy and physiology included case studies to help us think critically.鈥

But beyond the academics, it was the campus culture and community that made the biggest difference.

鈥淲hat separated it from going to another university was that everybody on campus was a nurse,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e all looked to each other for support and guidance. That was a big deal for me.鈥

Balancing school, family, and a full-time job was no easy task. Juleen, a mother of three, said discipline and time management were key to her success.

鈥淚f you really want something, you鈥檒l do it,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou still have to juggle that house life, school life, and work life. But it can be done.鈥

Despite the challenges, Juleen never wavered in her commitment.

鈥淚 was passionate about it,鈥 she said. 鈥淕ot up every morning, came to classes, didn鈥檛 miss a clinical. I wasn鈥檛 a magician, but I was juggling a lot.鈥

Looking back, Juleen called her experience at 国产主播 鈥渁wesome.鈥

鈥淓very school has its hiccups, and your experience is what you make it to be,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 took advantage of every opportunity. I took advantage of my nursing school 鈥 nursing school didn鈥檛 take advantage of me.鈥

For Katrell J., pursuing her dream meant making one of the hardest decisions of her life 鈥 letting her daughter live full-time with her former husband so she could attend school full-time. A U.S. Army veteran, Katrell is no stranger to sacrifice, but this one was personal.

After 15 months deployed in Iraq and years of grueling work in a correctional facility, Katrell recognized that in order to build a better future, she would need to fully commit to her education. That meant choosing to be away from her daughter鈥攁 decision she made not just for herself, but for the future of her family.

鈥淚 worked at a prison for 6 and 1/2 years. I worked 12-hour shifts, and that took away from me being a parent,鈥 she said. “In order for me to actually pursue this dream of mine, I had to allow her to stay with her father full-time.鈥澛

Despite the emotional toll, Katrell embraced the idea that being 鈥渟elfish鈥 in the short term could mean long-term gain for her and her daughter.

鈥淭ake the time that you need to. If you have to be selfish, be selfish because it’s not鈥攜ou’re not doing this for you, it’s for your family,鈥 she said.

When she discovered 国产主播-Miami, she felt an instant connection.

鈥淔rom the first conversation to coming in and doing the walk on campus 鈥 everything smooth and it felt like family, like community.鈥

Now, with the support of programs like Peer-Assisted Learning and a renewed purpose, Katrell is on the verge of giving back in the most meaningful way.聽PAL tutoring at WCU is a peer-led academic support program where students who excelled in earlier courses help their classmates succeed in those same subjects. These PAL tutors are carefully selected based on their strong academic performance and their ability to communicate difficult concepts in a way that resonates with fellow students.聽

鈥淚’m just so excited for the day to come where I can actually take those tools and use it and have somebody say, ‘Thank you, you helped me,鈥欌 she said.

Maria T. always knew she wanted to work in healthcare, but it wasn鈥檛 until later in life that she found the courage to pursue her dream. A former property manager with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Maria made the leap into nursing with determination 鈥 and hasn鈥檛 looked back since.

Her passion for women鈥檚 health runs deep. Surrounded by strong women in her own family, Maria was driven by a desire to be an advocate, especially for women of color who often feel unheard in medical settings.

鈥淚 come from a big line of women. I鈥檓 the middle one of three sisters, I have two nieces, and I know there鈥檚 a lot of disparities when a healthcare provider doesn鈥檛 listen to you as a woman,鈥 she said.

That personal motivation became professional purpose when she joined Memorial Healthcare System as a mother-baby nurse. In this postpartum specialty, Maria supports both newborns and mothers in the first critical days after delivery 鈥 a setting where joy can quickly turn into an emergency.

鈥淪ome things can happen in that setting that force you to apply those critical thinking skills and act quick on your feet,鈥 she said.

Maria鈥檚 journey to her ideal job wasn鈥檛 without its challenges. While pursuing her BSN at 国产主播-Miami, she balanced full-time work and a long commute. But support from faculty and her own fierce determination helped her push through.

鈥淥ne of my professors told me, 鈥楬ow you apply now is how you’re going to be out in the field, so I need you to apply your best and take it even a step forward,鈥欌 she said.

Her resilience was especially tested during the COVID-19 pandemic. But even then, Maria stayed focused 鈥 logging in for virtual classes and staying connected through skills labs and simulations.

鈥淚f you鈥檙e truly passionate about caring for others鈥 then don鈥檛 stop, don鈥檛 quit,鈥 she said.

If you’re facing long waitlists or steep tuition costs in your home state, relocating for nursing school might be your smartest next step. With its diverse communities, lower cost of living, and high employment of registered nurses (RNs), Florida could offer the opportunity you鈥檝e been looking for.

At WCU-Miami, you can begin your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to BSN, or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program without a waitlist. You can prepare to make a difference through hands-on training, all while enjoying the advantages of studying in one of the most vibrant cities in the country.

Keep reading to find out why choosing a Florida nursing school could set you up for long-term success.

1. Tuition Costs in Florida Are Often Lower Than in Other States

If you’re planning to become a registered nurse but are worried about affording nursing school, relocating to Florida could ease the burden. Many schools in Florida offer competitive tuition and access to financial aid, scholarships, and grants.

This can help free up funds for your relocation, daily living, or professional development. You鈥檒l also likely benefit from Florida鈥檚 overall lower cost of living compared to states like California or New York. That means more of your money can go toward building your future, not just getting through school.

    2. No Waitlist for the WCU Miami Nursing Programs

If you鈥檝e been stuck on a waitlist or denied admission due to limited spots, relocating to Florida can help you skip the line. 奥颁鲍鈥檚 Miami campus does not have a waitlist for the BSN, LPN to BSN, or ADN programs, meaning you can start your nursing education without delay.

Being able to move forward with your career goals right away can reduce stress and give you more control over your timeline. It also lets you focus on practical preparations 鈥 like moving, budgeting, or finding a part-time job 鈥 rather than wondering when or if you鈥檒l be accepted.

    3. Florida is a Top Employer of Registered Nurses

Florida consistently ranks among the , according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. With a large and growing population 鈥 including many retirees and seasonal residents 鈥 the state offers diverse clinical environments, from major hospitals to specialized care centers.

Starting your nursing journey in Florida gives you access to these opportunities along with valuable exposure to various patient populations and healthcare challenges. Whether you want to work in fast-paced ER settings or more community-based roles, Florida provides the foundation to grow.

    4. Florida Has No State Income Tax

Florida is one of the few states that does not collect personal income tax, which means you get to keep more of your paycheck after graduation. If you鈥檙e relocating from a state with high taxes, this financial benefit can be significant. Combined with lower living expenses in areas across Florida, it can help you manage debt, save for the future, or enjoy a better quality of life while launching your nursing career.

    5. Florida Nursing Licenses Support Career Flexibility

Even if you don鈥檛 plan to stay in Florida long-term, earning your BSN in Florida can be a strategic move. Florida is a member state, so once licensed, you can practice in dozens of other participating states without needing to reapply for a license.

If your home state isn鈥檛 part of the compact, you can still transfer your credentials by:

    • Verifying your nursing license
    • Completing a background check
    • Applying for endorsement in your desired state
    • Meeting any state-specific requirements

With a Florida-based education, you鈥檒l graduate with a strong clinical foundation and broad career mobility. You鈥檒l also benefit from training in one of the most multicultural regions of the country, gaining skills that translate to healthcare settings anywhere.

However, that doesn’t mean you have to put your education on hold.

From work-life balance to peer connection, here are some of the biggest advantages you鈥檒l find when taking nursing classes in the evening or on weekends:

    1. Maintain your current job: When you’re already employed 鈥 especially in a healthcare role 鈥 night and weekend classes give you the flexibility to continue working while earning your degree. This means less financial disruption and continued momentum in your career.

    2. Support your family responsibilities: If you’re balancing child care, elder care, or other responsibilities, this flexible format can make it easier to manage it all. You don’t have to choose between being there for your loved ones and continuing your education.

    3. Join a focused, like-minded environment: Withevening and weekend classes, you鈥檒l be surrounded by students who are just as driven and focused on their long-term goals as you are. That shared mindset can lead you to stronger collaboration, deeper peer support, and mutual motivation throughout your journey.

    4. Learn during your most productive hours: If you tend to focus better later in the day, evening classes might align more naturally with your personal rhythms, which can help you stay engaged and absorb more during lessons.

    Cons of Flexible Nursing Classes

While night or weekend nursing classes offer plenty of advantages, you should know that they also come with a few challenges. Understanding the potential trade-offs can help you set yourself up for success before jumping in:

    1. Weekend and evening nursing classes can be demanding: Flexibility is a huge plus, but these programs still require a serious commitment of your time and energy. You can expect packed weekends or nights, especially when it comes to meeting your clinical requirements. However, if you鈥檙e already handling multiple responsibilities, this might just feel like a natural extension of your routine.

    2. Your social life might shift: Evening classes or weekend labs might occasionally cut into personal time with your friends and family. You鈥檒l need to plan ahead and remind yourself that this is a temporary exchange for long-term goals 鈥 one that鈥檚 worth it in the end.

    3. You鈥檒l need strong self-discipline: With fewer class sessions each week, you鈥檒l cover more material at once and have more responsibility for staying on top of assignments.

Should You Choose Nursing Night Classes or Weekend Classes?

When you’re trying to fit nursing school into an already full schedule, finding the right format matters. However, how do you decide between night classes and weekend classes? It often comes down to your current routine and when you鈥檙e most available.

    • Night classes may work best if your days are filled with work, childcare, or errands.
    • Weekend classes might suit you better if evenings are out of the picture or if you prefer longer study sessions packed into fewer days.

If your schedule requires even more adaptability, some programs offer a slower-paced option for working professionals. It may take you more time to graduate, but this kind of structure gives you additional breathing room if you’re dealing with burnout or navigating unpredictable responsibilities.

At WCU – Miami, you can choose a Working Professional pace or an Evening & Weekend pace. The Evening & Weekend pace includes both evening and weekend classes as part of a unified schedule 鈥 these are not separate options but a combined format designed to work with your busy schedule.

Take a look at some of the paces below to find what鈥檚 right for you:

    • Evening & Weekend pace: 44 months
    • Working Professional pace: 54 months

Is a Flexible Nursing Schedule Right for You?

Before choosing a nursing program, it’s worth asking: what kind of schedule will actually work for your life? Options like evening, weekend, or extended-pace formats can make it possible to earn your degree without stepping away from your other responsibilities. However, it鈥檚 important to know whether this type of structure aligns with your needs.

You might thrive in a flexible program if you:

    • Want to earn your BSN quickly
    • Need to fit classes around a full-time or part-time job
    • Prefer evening hours or longer weekend study blocks
    • Primarily handle caregiving or household responsibilities

Keep in mind that flexibility doesn鈥檛 mean the program will be easy 鈥 it means that the format is more adaptable. You鈥檒l still need strong time management skills and the discipline to stay on track between class sessions. Being organized, proactive, and consistent will go a long way in helping you succeed.

Remember: the best choice is the one that supports both your goals and your daily life so you can move forward with confidence.

国产主播 nursing student Genie R. was recently recognized with the prestigious Daisy Award, honoring her compassionate care and poise during a critical moment in her clinical rotation. The BSN student, who is set to graduate later in 2025, was surprised with the award during class 鈥 completely unaware she had even been nominated.

The moment that sparked Rene鈥檚 nomination happened during a clinical rotation in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, when a pediatric patient went into cardiac arrest. Though still a student, Rene instinctively jumped into action 鈥 supporting the medical team, gathering supplies, and anticipating needs, all while staying within her scope of practice.

鈥淚t was just like a nice flow with the unit,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hank God that in skills and in the simulation lab they teach you the proper names for the tools and materials that we need.鈥

For Rene, the experience was a powerful validation of the simulation-based training she received at WCU, which she credits with helping her stay composed in a high-stress situation.

鈥淪IM is extremely important. It came in handy during the code while in clinicals,鈥 she said.

Rene鈥檚 motivation to pursue nursing is deeply personal. Her mother鈥檚 long battle with illness shaped her understanding of what compassionate care truly looks like. She still remembers a particular nurse who made an impression not just for how she cared for her mother, but for how she treated Rene as well.

鈥淪he didn鈥檛 only give attention to my mom, but also to me,鈥 she said. 鈥淪he always made sure her linen was clean… she brought that extra step or extra care that was not part of her scope, but she did it anyway.鈥

Rene hopes to bring that same energy to her future patients.

鈥淚 treat patients like they’re my family,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 just hope that I’m remembered as, 鈥極h my gosh, she went the extra mile.鈥欌

Even as many in the field move away from bedside nursing, Rene remains committed.

鈥淭hey remember your name. They remember what you did for them when you bring that extra care,鈥 she said.

With her heart set on making a difference, Rene鈥檚 journey is just beginning 鈥 but she鈥檚 already leaving a lasting impression.

From early high school, Lorelys A. knew she wanted a career centered on helping people. A certified nursing assistant program at 16 sparked her passion for nursing, setting her on a focused path that led her straight to 国产主播 鈥 a choice she made because of its healthcare focus.

Now a proud graduate of 国产主播’s accelerated nursing program and a pediatric registered nurse, Lorelys shared that what set WCU-Miami apart was its student-centered approach.

鈥淚f you had an issue, they would take their time to address it,鈥 she recalled.

Throughout her journey, she leaned on university resources such as the virtual library, tutoring programs, and even a question bank to prepare for the rigorous NCLEX exam. After graduating in March and passing the exam in May, Lorelys stepped into her current role as a school-based pediatric nurse, where she supports two young patients with diabetes and seizure conditions. Managing an accelerated nursing program was no small feat. Time management and prioritization were key, but she also credits her family for their unwavering support.

鈥淢y parents made sure I had everything I needed, from meals to encouragement,鈥 she shared

As the first in her family to graduate college, Lorelys feels a deep sense of pride and gratitude. She hopes her story inspires others to pursue their passions, no matter how challenging the path may seem.

For future nursing students, Lorelys offered simple but powerful advice: 鈥淲ork really hard. Your dreams can come true. Even if it seems impossible, you can do it.鈥
