When Natalie A. first set out to explore a career in healthcare, she envisioned herself in speech therapy. However, a twist of fate led her to discover her true passion in occupational therapy.
“I was volunteering at an outpatient rehab hospital in my local area, shadowing a speech therapist,” she recalled. “When my speech therapist was out sick, I was placed with an occupational therapist instead. I honestly didn’t know what OT was at the time, but spending the day with her and witnessing how she treats patients holistically made me fall in love with the profession.”
Choosing 国产主播
Natalie’s journey to OT school was not immediate; after graduating from UC Riverside, she worked in various healthcare-related roles, including as a research assistant in clinical research and later transitioning to Applied Behavior Analysis therapy, where she worked with children on the autism spectrum. These experiences solidified her desire to pursue occupational therapy.
After learning about 国产主播 from a friend who was already enrolled in the program, Natalie decided to explore further.
“My friend told me that West Coast had a family-oriented feel, which really resonated with me,” she shared. “I attended an open house, toured the campus, and met the faculty. I was so impressed by the supportive environment that I knew this was the place for me.”
Faculty Support and Mentorship
One of the aspects Natalie values most about her experience at 国产主播 is the support from faculty members. “The faculty here are incredibly caring and challenge us in the best ways possible,” she said. “My faculty mentor, Dr. Dor, has been instrumental in helping me prepare for my fieldwork interviews by providing guidance on resume building and interview techniques. Thanks to his support, I secured my fieldwork placement at an outpatient neuro rehab facility.”
Gaining Hands-On Experience
Natalie鈥檚 dedication to her studies led her to an exciting opportunity as a research assistant with Dr. Picus and Dr. Kier, faculty members at 国产主播. “They posted an announcement on our Canvas portal, and I decided to apply,” she explained. “Through this experience, I’ve gained valuable insights into the research process, which has been crucial for my OTD Capstone project.” Natalie worked closely with faculty to conduct focus groups and gain a deeper understanding of the research process, an invaluable asset for her doctorate journey.
Fieldwork and Future Aspirations
Natalie is set to begin her fieldwork rotation in Torrance at an outpatient neuro rehab facility specializing in treating clients with neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, strokes, and Parkinson’s disease. “The clinic’s holistic approach, including collaboration with OTs, PTs, psychologists, and even personal trainers, really resonated with me,” she said. “If all goes well, I hope to return for my Capstone project.”聽
Looking ahead, Natalie envisions incorporating her passion for yoga into her OT practice, seeing great potential in using yoga as an intervention for clients with neurological conditions.
Building Lasting Connections
Beyond academics, Natalie highlighted the strong sense of community within her cohort.
“The small class sizes allow us to form meaningful connections and friendships,” she said. “Having a support system has made all the difference in overcoming the challenges of the program.”
Advice for Future Students
For those considering a career in occupational therapy at 国产主播, Natalie offered valuable advice: “Take a leap of faith and trust the process. The faculty and peers will support you every step of the way, and the experience will help you grow both personally and professionally.”

Faith P.鈥檚 path to becoming an occupational therapy doctorate student at 国产主播鈥檚 Center for Graduate Studies wasn鈥檛 always clear. Her journey, which began with a kinesiology degree, has now led her to a program she is passionate about 鈥 and one that is helping her build the career she always dreamed of.
Faith鈥檚 love for the human body and its systems started early. She pursued a bachelor鈥檚 in kinesiology at another university, knowing she wanted a career that allowed her to understand and work with the body. It wasn鈥檛 until she met a friend 鈥 someone who had already graduated from her alma mater 鈥 that she first learned about occupational therapy.
鈥淪he was in the process of coming back for some additional credits to pursue the master鈥檚 program [at West Coast],鈥 Faith explained. 鈥淲e got to talking, and she introduced me to the world of OT. She raved about it, and as she shared more, I just fell in love with the idea.鈥
This conversation sparked something in Faith. It was her friend鈥檚 enthusiasm for OT and her own deep interest in human health that made Faith take the leap and apply for the OT program at WCU-CGS.
鈥淪he told me the program was amazing, and that West Coast had a great track record with the NBCOT exam,鈥 Faith recalled. 鈥淭hat was really what sold me, knowing the program was designed to help me succeed.鈥
Faith was also pleasantly surprised by the support and resources available at WCU-CGS, which exceeded her expectations.
鈥淚 never expected to have so many opportunities to connect with people,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he resources, the community 鈥 it鈥檚 all beyond what I imagined. I鈥檓 not just learning a profession; I鈥檓 building long-lasting relationships and a career that I never thought I could create.鈥
One of the most rewarding aspects of Faith鈥檚 experience has been the strong sense of community she鈥檚 found at WCU-CGS.
鈥淭he connections I鈥檝e made have been crucial to my success,鈥 she shared. 鈥淔rom the moment I stepped on campus, I鈥檝e felt like I鈥檓 part of something bigger than myself.鈥
Faith鈥檚 cohort has become like a family. 鈥淲e talk every day, even outside of school. It鈥檚 not just about OT. We鈥檝e really become close friends,鈥 she added.
She鈥檚 also been able to build relationships with faculty, mentors, and other students through various leadership roles. Faith serves as a coordinator for Peer Assisted Learning (PALs), where upper-term students mentor newer cohorts, helping them with practical exams and study sessions.
鈥淚t鈥檚 an amazing experience,鈥 Faith said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 like I鈥檓 giving back what I鈥檝e learned, and it鈥檚 been a great way to connect with other students.鈥
In addition, Faith is the president of the Student Occupational Therapy Association, where she works alongside other student leaders to promote community engagement, fundraising, and wellness for OT students.
鈥淚 never expected to be president of SOTA,鈥 she laughed. 鈥淏ut I had the support of my community. They encouraged me to step into this leadership role, and with their help, I鈥檝e been able to succeed.鈥
In contrast to her undergrad experience, WCU-CGS has provided Faith with a clear and structured path.
鈥淭hey gave me everything I needed 鈥 classes, timelines, even resources like the library and fieldwork coordinators,鈥 Faith said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been so much more organized and supportive than my undergrad experience. I feel like I finally have the guidance I need.鈥
For anyone considering a career in occupational therapy, Faith had some wise advice: 鈥淛ust go for it. Don鈥檛 doubt yourself. It鈥檚 hard work, but you can do hard things.鈥

Considering a career in occupational therapy or nursing? Though it may not be immediately obvious, these fields overlap more than you might think. Both occupational therapists (OTs) and nurses work closely with patients across diverse healthcare settings, and their roles are more similar than they are different.
While the educational and certification paths to enter each career can vary, occupational therapists must graduate with a degree (such as a Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy) from an accredited institution to be eligible for the much in the same way that prospective nurses must graduate with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing to be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN.
Since both professions play crucial roles in clinical settings, understanding their unique responsibilities and qualifications will help you make an informed decision as to which path could be the right fit for you. Keep reading to explore the overlaps in occupational therapy and nursing including responsibilities, educational requirements, and more.
Occupational therapy involves helping individuals of all ages with moving through day-to-day life. Most OT patients face challenges that affect their ability to care for themselves, work, or socialize with others. Therapies can range from play-based activities for children to adapting to assistive technologies and equipment like mobility aides.
There are a few different roles within occupational therapy, including occupational therapy aides, occupational therapy assistants, and occupational therapists.
According to the , both occupational therapy assistants and occupational therapy aides assist occupational therapists with administering treatments and procedures to patients. OT aides generally require a high school diploma, while OT assistants require a minimum of an associate鈥檚 degree along with a state-issued license.
Occupational therapists, on the other hand, can perform the duties of both occupational therapy aides and assistants because they undergo more education and specialized training, typically through a master鈥檚 degree program. This allows them to develop treatment plans, evaluate patient progress, and provide comprehensive services independently of aides and assistants.
Occupational therapy aides and occupational therapy assistants work together to carry out the treatment plans that occupational therapists develop, making recovery a collaborative effort.
Much like the field of occupational therapy, there鈥檚 a wide range of paths you can take in the field of nursing. Nurses play a central role in patient care as they often serve as the primary point of contact for most patients.
Some common paths for nurses include certified nurse assistants (CNAs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), registered nurses (RNs), and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs).
Similar to occupational therapy aides and occupational therapy assistants, registered nurses work under the supervision of other nurse professionals, typically under a nurse practitioner. However, while both registered nurses and nurse practitioners work to oversee patient health and treat patient needs, only nurse practitioners can develop treatment plans and diagnose acute illnesses.
Nurses can also take on more advanced nursing roles by pursuing different specializations, such as adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner (AGPCNP) or nurse leadership.
On paper, occupational therapy and nursing may appear as distinct professions鈥攂oth with their own unique responsibilities, educational requirements, and scope of practice. However, because occupational therapy centers around the care of others, it often overlaps with nursing through its shared emphasis on patient advocacy, emotional support, and teamwork.
The sections below outline the key aspects of each career to help give you a clear understanding of their responsibilities and educational requirements.
For occupational therapists, every aspect of their job is dedicated to helping patients regain the skills needed to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. As a result, they鈥檙e focused on a targeted niche in healthcare.
They work with individuals facing physical, mental, or emotional challenges due to injuries, illnesses, or disabilities. While they collaborate with doctors and other healthcare providers, occupational therapists take the lead in designing and guiding personalized treatment plans.
Here鈥檚 a closer look at :
Nurses are healthcare professionals who provide direct patient care, monitor health conditions, and make sure that treatments are carried out safely and correctly. They typically work across a large , and their responsibilities can vary depending on not only their educational background but also the department in which they work.
Similar to occupational therapists, they collaborate with teams to deliver exceptional care and ensure the well-being of their patients.
Here鈥檚 a closer look at a few of the :
To become an occupational therapist, you鈥檒l need a master鈥檚 degree in occupational therapy, which generally includes advanced training in patient care and treatment planning. Before enrolling in a master鈥檚 program, you must complete a bachelor鈥檚 degree in a related field, such as biology or health sciences.
However, some Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) programs, like WCU鈥檚 program offered at the Center for Graduate Studies in Los Angeles, don鈥檛 require you to hold a bachelor鈥檚 degree. The program can be completed in as little as 24 months and involves a combination of on-campus instruction and online learning.
If you don鈥檛 hold a bachelor鈥檚, you can qualify for the MSOT program if you meet these requirements:
Courses you鈥檒l take in a Master of Occupational Therapy program will cover topics like anatomy and physiology, rehabilitation techniques, how to provide patient care, neuroscience for occupational therapy, and how to perform occupational therapy assessments for children and adults.
Both the academic coursework and hands-on components conducted through fieldwork in the program also prepare you to pass the , which is required to practice as a registered occupational therapist.
Registered nurses typically earn a bachelor鈥檚 degree in nursing (BSN) or an associate degree in nursing (ADN). Many healthcare organizations prefer nurses with a BSN, while in some cases, it鈥檚 .
Nursing programs combine clinical training and theoretical knowledge to help prepare students for direct patient care and specialized roles while also equipping them with the knowledge and experience needed to pass their licensure exams.
Common courses you鈥檒l take in a BSN program include topics like pharmacology, pathophysiology, disaster management, and fundamentals of nursing practice.
Choosing between occupational therapy and nursing is a personal decision that depends on your interests, goals, and the type of patient involvement you prefer. Take the time to reflect on a few of these questions to determine which path aligns with your goals:
Occupational therapy and nursing might be ideal career paths for you if you identify with some of the following skills or traits:
If you find meaning in empowering others through daily activities and building their independence, occupational therapy may be your calling.
In fact, occupational therapy can be ideal for those who have a passion for patient care but seek additional career opportunities in areas like rehabilitation or personalized treatment planning. You’ll also get more one-on-one time with patients as an occupational therapist, allowing you to focus deeply on their individual needs and goals for recovery.
Want to earn your Master鈥檚 in Occupational Therapy and prepare to pass the NBCOT in as little as two years? At WCU, you have the opportunity to engage in hands-on practice while building professional connections that can help shape your career.

An is a licensed healthcare professional who works under the supervision of an occupational therapist to help patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. OTAs play a hands-on role in patient care, working directly with a healthcare team to implement treatment plans that promote recovery and enhance each patient鈥檚 quality of life.
To practice, occupational therapy assistants must earn a minimum of an associate degree along with national and state licensure.
Key Responsibilities of an OTA:
Occupational therapy assistants conduct more than just daily, routine tasks like checking in on their patients, reporting on a patient鈥檚 progress to an OT, and educating families or caregivers. OTAs typically work in hospitals, educational institutions, and home care settings. Some of their include:
An is a licensed healthcare professional who assesses, plans, and oversees comprehensive treatment plans to help patients overcome day-to-day challenges across all areas of life.
Unlike OTAs, OTs have a higher degree of authority to independently evaluate patients, develop personalized treatment plans, and make critical decisions regarding patient care. While occupational therapists have the expertise to perform these tasks alone, they typically collaborate with OTAs to deliver coordinated services that ensure effective patient outcomes.
To practice in most states, OTs need a minimum of a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) along with national and state certification.

You might have heard of occupational therapy as a great treatment option for adults dealing with injuries or illnesses, but did you know it鈥檚 also a great option for children? Occupational therapy, also known as OT, can be a game-changer for children facing developmental, sensory, or physical challenges.
By focusing on therapeutic activities, OT helps build skills, boost confidence, and develop the ability to thrive in school and beyond. Keep reading to learn more about how occupational therapy for kids can make a difference in children鈥檚 development!
Occupational therapy for kids 鈥 often referred to as pediatric occupational therapy 鈥 is a kind of therapy that helps children develop the skills they need for daily living and independence. It often focuses on improving fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and sensory processing abilities. The goal is to meet children where they are and help them achieve their full potential. This means helping them engage in school and participate in the activities they enjoy, whether this is sports, arts and crafts, or socializing.
Many children can benefit from OT, including kids with:
Occupational therapy can greatly help children who are struggling in school or having trouble with social skills, as it focuses on giving them the functional strategies they need to overcome obstacles and gain independence. This can in turn help them flourish as they develop confidence over time.
Your child鈥檚 pediatrician or healthcare provider can help you determine if occupational therapy is the right choice. In general, occupational therapy for kids can help in cases where a child exhibits:
While these are just general guidelines, OT can often help kids in all of these areas, giving them the tools to overcome struggles.
Occupational therapy can be a key tool in helping children on the autism spectrum meet milestones and reach their full potential. OT does this by aiding them in different areas where they might struggle, including:
Occupational therapy can greatly support kids with autism by addressing all these areas, helping empower children to participate more fully in their lives and engage in the activities they love.
Occupational therapists are at the core of successful therapy. They create individualized plans for each child鈥檚 needs, incorporating a variety of techniques, including play-based activities and sensory integration. They鈥檒l work closely with parents and caregivers to develop strategies for supporting the child鈥檚 development at home. Additionally, occupational therapists will collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as physical therapists and speech therapists, to provide comprehensive client-centered care.
Occupational therapists go through rigorous training in order to deliver evidence-based care. They need at least a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) to be eligible for their OT license, although many choose to pursue an Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD).
If you鈥檙e interested in becoming an occupational therapists, WCU offers both an MSOT and an OTD program at our WCU-Center for Graduate Studies campus in Los Angeles! Reserve your seat at one of our upcoming info sessions to learn more. RSVP now!
During sessions, kids might also interact with occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) who might help them through exercises, provide instructions, or measure their progress.
You might have a better idea of what to expect from an OT session designed for adults. They鈥檒l include exercises and stretches meant to help movement as well as recommendations and instructions from your occupational therapist. Occupational therapy for kids looks almost the same, except it includes different kinds of games or toys designed to help them develop skills.
The length and frequency of OT sessions will vary depending on a child鈥檚 need. They could be as quick as 30 minutes once a week or as often as 60-minute sessions multiple times per week. Your occupational therapist will be able to provide recommendations based on a plan tailored specifically for your child.
The first step in order to access occupational therapy is to consult with your child鈥檚 pediatrician or healthcare provider. They will help you determine if OT is right for your kid.
According to the , occupational therapists often work in specialized OT clinics, in elementary and secondary schools, or in home healthcare services. Depending on your situation, you might be able to access OT services through schools or you might have to find a local occupational therapy clinic or private practice.
Additionally, you should always contact your health insurance provider to determine if occupational therapy is covered under your plan.

If you鈥檙e looking for rewarding healthcare fields where you can work one-on-one with clients, you might have heard of occupational therapy (OT). Professionals in this field work directly with clients to improve their quality of life. Aspiring occupational therapists need at least a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) degree to get started 鈥 but exactly what is occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy is a field within healthcare dedicated to helping individuals with injuries, illnesses, or disabilities perform the tasks (or occupations) they need in daily living. OT promotes health and well-being by helping people carry out the activities that matter most to them 鈥 from dressing themselves to participating in hobbies.
An occupational therapist, for example, could help a stroke victim regain fine motor skills. They can work with children who have cognitive disabilities to get them integrated with their peers. They could also provide adaptive eating technology to help clients enjoy meals independently.
At the core of effective OT practice are the occupational therapists who work one-on-one with their clients to identify goals, create personalized plans, and track progress. They are the heart and soul of the profession, providing individualized care every step of the way.
According to the ,1 some of the tasks occupational therapists perform include:
Overall, occupational therapists provide holistic care that鈥檚 always aimed at improving quality of life, independence, and enjoyment.
Occupational therapists can treat a wide range of conditions, including physical disabilities, mental illnesses, and cognitive impairments. They can work with individuals of all ages, from young children to older adults, tailoring each plan for the client鈥檚 specific goals and needs.
Because occupational therapists can work with such diverse types of clients, some have chosen to specialize in one area, allowing them to match their skills to their passions. For example, the (AOTA) offers who want to specialize in gerontology, pediatrics, and physical rehabilitation.2
Due to the wide range of conditions they treat, OTs can also work in many different settings including hospitals, OT offices, elementary and secondary schools, home healthcare services, and skilled nursing facilities.1
The OT process begins with an evaluation of the individual鈥檚 medical history and current abilities. First, occupational therapists assess client needs and goals to set expectations. They then create personalized plans for each client. In addition to therapeutic exercises, this plan might include adaptive equipment, caregiver training, and strategies for performing daily tasks. Finally, they then work with the individual to implement the plan, adapting as needed to help them reach their goals.
Occupational therapy can be accessed through a doctor鈥檚 prescription or referral. Individuals can also access OT services through private practice or outpatient clinics. Many insurance plans can help cover the costs of these services.
Depending on a client鈥檚 conditions and needs, occupational therapy can deliver a wide range of benefits. Through tailored, evidence-proven strategies, occupational therapy can offer:
Whether the client is recovering from an injury, managing a chronic illness, or facing developmental delays, occupational therapy can provide holistic support to manage their health and well-being.
Occupational therapy is a rewarding and fulfilling healthcare field that helps individuals achieve independence and participate in daily activities. OT practitioners provide an invaluable service that can help change lives in an impactful and meaningful way.

The path to becoming an occupational therapist (OT) has been a unique and transformative experience, especially when navigating the nuances of online learning. As a 国产主播 OT program student, Devora W. had the opportunity to experience a synchronous learning format that blends the best of both worlds 鈥 online and in-person education. Here is what she had to share about her experience.
鈥淥ne of the standout benefits of the OT program is the flexibility it offers through its online synchronous classes. With several days dedicated to online learning, it allows us to remain in the comfort of our homes, save time on commuting, and manage other responsibilities like family and homework. This structure is particularly supportive, providing the necessary balance to accommodate our personal and academic lives.鈥
鈥淲hen comparing online learning to traditional classroom settings, the ability to stay at home stands out as a major advantage. Personally, I find comfort in learning from home, though I also appreciate the in-person sessions that offer hands-on experience. This hybrid model ensures we receive comprehensive training without sacrificing the convenience that online classes provide.鈥
鈥淭he primary advantages of online classes include the comfort of being at home and the significant time saved on commuting. This time can be reallocated to other essential activities, making the learning process more efficient and adaptable to our schedules. The seamless operation of online classes these days further enhances the learning experience, making it a viable and effective alternative to traditional methods.鈥
鈥淭o future students considering the OT program, my advice is simple: push through. The journey may seem daunting, but the end is closer than it appears. Enjoy every moment and embrace each experience as an opportunity for growth. This period is crucial for developing into the OT professional you aspire to be.鈥
鈥淲hat I love most about OT is the ability to help individuals regain confidence and independence in their lives. The rewarding nature of this work is not just about the impact on others, but also the personal fulfillment it brings. Seeing someone’s life transform is truly an amazing experience.鈥
鈥淚f I could go back in time to my first day at WCU, I would tell myself that the program progresses faster than expected. This awareness would encourage me to savor each moment and maximize my learning opportunities.鈥
鈥淎fter graduating, I aim to raise awareness about the true essence of occupational therapy. It鈥檚 not just about helping people find jobs; it鈥檚 about empowering individuals to achieve their fullest potential and independence. Post-graduation, I look forward to working in the pediatric field and am excited about the new chapter that awaits.鈥
