More than 160 国产主播-Ontario students enjoyed games, food, and giveaways while also learning about the wide range of services available through 奥颁鲍鈥檚 Library.

鈥淥ur goal was to showcase the library and remind students that we鈥檙e here to help,鈥 said WCU librarian Nalini S. 鈥淪ometimes students are shy or unsure about asking questions, but events like this make it easier to connect.鈥

Enticing students with a prize wheel and free donuts, Nalini was joined by fellow WCU librarians Lauren M., Ka C., and Marie M., who all played a key role in welcoming students, answering questions, and guiding them toward helpful resources. Many students said they were surprised to discover just how many tools they already had at their fingertips.

鈥淪ome students didn鈥檛 know about the Virtual Academic Resource Center or that we have dedicated tutoring services,鈥 Nalini S. explained. 鈥淥thers were surprised to learn about the wonderful databases available to help with their research and assignments.鈥

Accessible directly through the Canvas course menu, WCU Library site serves as the central hub for student resources, including:

  • A-to-Z Databases: Access eBooks, peer-reviewed articles, drug guides, medical information, and nursing resources.听
  • APA Help Guides: Step-by-step support for formatting and citing papers.听
  • Virtual Academic Resource Center (VARC): Tutoring and practice tools for writing, math, science, and nursing coursework. Includes a Nursing Course Center with:听
    • Practice exams
    • Medical terminology help
    • Morphology resources
  • Webinars, Tutorials, and Study Tools: Videos, flashcards, and live support to strengthen skills.听
  • Nurse Academic Specialists (NAS Team): Located across campuses, including Ontario, Los Angeles, and Texas, to support nursing students in NCLEX preparation.

Nalini S.鈥檚 advice for students is straightforward: 鈥淎lways come to the library鈥檚 website first. You鈥檙e going to find what you鈥檙e looking for. And if you can鈥檛, ask the librarian. That鈥檚 why we encourage appointments, so students can get to know their sources in more depth.鈥

With new events planned across other campuses, Nalini S. hopes even more students will take advantage of the library鈥檚 resources. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of information, but the library is here to guide you through it all.鈥

国产主播-Ontario nursing student Matthew L. was recently honored with the recognizing his curiosity, willingness to learn, and positive influence on those around him. Unaware that he had been nominated, Matthew was both surprised and humbled when he received the award.听听

Reflecting on that moment, Matthew said, 鈥淗onestly, I have no idea why I was nominated. In my head, I was just asking and answering questions to test my own knowledge. I have no problem with asking a 鈥榙umb question鈥 because I know there are others who may have the same question.鈥

Matthew鈥檚 journey into nursing began with his military medical training, but it wasn鈥檛 until his personal experience as a Trauma ICU patient that he truly realized his calling.

鈥淚 remember that my nurses were always at my bedside taking care of me,鈥 he shared. 鈥淭he doctors were involved, but I saw my nurses more than anyone else. I realized that nursing was my true calling after going through my own recovery and physical therapy.鈥

When asked why he chose WCU-Ontario, Matthew explained, 鈥淚 have multiple friends and colleagues who went through the nursing program. WCU was always mentioned because of its advanced BSN program and high NCLEX passing rate.鈥澨

Throughout his nursing school journey, Matthew鈥檚 favorite aspect has been applying his knowledge as an emergency department technician.

鈥淏eing able to ask questions in class and apply them directly in the emergency department helps me better understand what鈥檚 happening to my patients,鈥 he said.

Balancing family, work, and school has been one of Matthew鈥檚 greatest challenges.

鈥淭he most daunting challenge for me is maintaining balance in my life,鈥 he shared. 鈥淢y son and wife are my motivation to keep pushing through the long days of studying, classes, or clinicals. I am doing this to provide for my family and show them that anything is possible.鈥

For students about to begin their clinicals, Matthew offers advice: 鈥淏e open-minded, always volunteer to help with tasks you鈥檙e unfamiliar with, and ask questions. You will never know everything, but staying curious will help you grow.鈥

国产主播-Ontario recently created an impressive real-life simulation for nursing students, with a mass casualty event replication that provided the opportunity to test their skills and knowledge base in an experiential environment.听

Learning in Real Time

WCU-Ontario Simulation faculty Gabriel G. wanted to use his emergency room background to create a truly unique experience for nursing students that went beyond the simulation lab setting. He collaborated with WCU-Ontario Simulation Center manager Rochelle M. to develop potential scenarios for students that are aligned with 奥颁鲍鈥檚 guidelines and curriculum standards.

鈥淲ith Gabriel鈥檚 25 years of background in ER, planning this was right up his alley,鈥 Rochelle said. 鈥淗e took on the organization of this event and we worked closely together to ensure the content was at an appropriate level for these student learners.鈥

From Parking Lot to Patient Care

After reviewing the potential scenarios, the team decided to construct an automobile accident scenario in the campus parking lot that also extended into the simulation lab 鈥 working with their colleague Simulation Center Specialist Jose C., to develop a real-life replication. It was decided the best students to navigate this experience were those in 498L Integration of Nursing Practices, the culminating nursing practicum course designed to prepare students for the real work environment of an RN.

鈥淚 started my career as an EMT and loved the challenge behind it,鈥 Gabriel said. 鈥淚 wanted to give the students something that was truly different. While not everyone wants to pursue an ER career, skills like communication are developed during these experiences 鈥 which are critical to their success as healthcare professionals.鈥

The simulation team prepared for the event with a couple of dry runs, as the associates had to leverage quite a bit of technology. Several other faculty members and support staff helped execute everything, as well. Everyone had a role to play 鈥 from doctors to accident victim patients. An instructor with a microphone even 鈥渢alked鈥 as a patient, responding to nursing students and helping create a simulation that worked in the parking lot just as it does inside the simulation lab.

Building Confidence for the Real World

Gabriel admits the mass casualty event scenario took lots of work and creativity, but students had nothing but positive feedback to share. Several even asked when they鈥檒l be doing a similar event on campus.

鈥淲e all walked in thinking it was going to be another regular sim, not that the first group would end up in the parking lot for a mass casualty incident,鈥 said Alejandra C, a WCU-Ontario BSN student. 鈥淚t really tested us 鈥 thinking on our feet, being quick with our assessments, and identifying our next move. It was nice to have something different. This felt a lot more fast-paced, like we all had to do something new.鈥

A 鈥楴ursing Imagineer鈥 at Work

With some students in the parking lot and others handling or observing patients in the simulation lab, the Simulation team was able to create the full scope of a mass casualty event. Students took turns caring for patients and observing the activities both inside and outside. As a WCU alumni, Gabriel also wanted to ensure students felt safe and prepared, and prioritized their psychological safety, as well.

Due to the immense success of this event, the team is already preparing to develop similar simulations for students. The experience not only gives them a look at what it鈥檚 like to work in a hospital setting but also helps them test their knowledge in novel ways.

鈥淭he university provides such great resources for us, and it was great to leverage it,鈥 Rochelle said. 鈥淎s a former faculty member, I liked being encouraged to do new and creative things to help students learn. As a manager, I like supporting our faculty to do these types of events.鈥

国产主播-Ontario’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is more than just a degree 鈥 it’s a transformative experience that challenges students to grow academically, professionally, and personally. Valerie A., a recent graduate and student speaker at the January 2025 BSN pinning ceremony, captured that transformation with powerful words, reflecting on the courage, commitment, and resilience it takes to become a nurse.

The Shared Struggles of Nursing School

鈥淭he exit exam. Uniform checks. Sim lab validations. Clinical judgment plans. Med math. Panel interviews.鈥 Valerie listed off the milestones every nursing student recognizes with a bittersweet mix of anxiety and pride. Her speech reminded fellow graduates that they weren鈥檛 alone in those challenges. Whether it was triple-checking assignments in Canvas or silencing phones before exams, these shared experiences forged a unique bond among future nurses.

Every 国产主播 BSN student at our university understands the intensity of this journey 鈥 but they also understand the reward.

Finding Your “Why” in Nursing

Valerie鈥檚 story began in a chaotic emergency room in 2019. Faced with overwhelmed hospitals and patients in crisis, she witnessed firsthand the selfless strength of nurses. That moment inspired her to pursue a career in healthcare, leading her to 国产主播 in Ontario, California 鈥 a decision she says changed the trajectory of her life.

鈥淩emember your why,鈥 she told her fellow graduates. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been chosen for this honor. It鈥檚 our insatiable appetite to help others that has shaped us into the nurses we are today.鈥

At WCU-Ontario, BSN students are reminded that nursing isn鈥檛 just a job 鈥 it鈥檚 a calling.

A Community of Support

During her time at 国产主播, Valerie not only gained the clinical knowledge needed to care for patients but also built lasting friendships and found a community of support.

鈥淭o my son, whom I had while pursuing my nursing education at West Coast, I can鈥檛 wait to tell you about the pivotal moment I first wore this uniform,鈥 she shared.

She also thanked her family, friends, professors and seven women of her dedicated cohort who stood by her side every step of the way. That鈥檚 the power of the BSN program at WCU: “it equips students with a network of future healthcare leaders, all committed to uplifting one another and delivering compassionate, competent care.”

Preparing Nurses for the Real World

Valerie knows that the next chapter won’t be without its challenges. As she reminded the crowd, new nurses may find themselves holding the hand of a patient in their final moments or helping bring a new life into the world. But the rigorous BSN training at 国产主播 ensures that graduates are prepared to meet those moments with skill and heart.

鈥淥ur resilience has been challenged, our purpose clarified, and our advocacy expanded,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e carry compassion in our hearts, and it鈥檚 our honor to funnel that kindness into the lives of others.鈥

Beyond the Bedside: 9 Non-Bedside Nursing Careers You Can Pursue With a BSN

Looking to earn your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) but not sure if traditional bedside care is the path for you? You’re not alone and there are, in fact, a variety of rewarding non-bedside nursing career options.

Many nursing students and practicing RNs find that while they love healthcare, they鈥檙e drawn to roles that don鈥檛 involve direct, hands-on patient care. Whether you’re looking for a different pace, reduced physical demands, or a way to apply your clinical expertise in new settings, a BSN can open the door to a range of meaningful, non-bedside nursing careers.

Keep reading if you’re curious about where your BSN degree can take you beyond traditional patient care roles.

What Are Non-Bedside Nursing Careers?

Non-bedside nursing jobs are roles that allow you to leverage your clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and healthcare experience without providing direct patient care. These careers span fields like education, informatics, writing, legal consulting, and health technology. While they may be lesser known than bedside nurses, these roles are equally important in the healthcare field.

These roles can offer flexibility and stability 鈥 with some offering the ability to work remotely 鈥 making them a great option for those just starting out or making a career pivot.

9 Non-Bedside Nursing Careers You Can Pursue With a BSN

The following careers allow you to put your BSN to work in non-clinical settings. Some may require additional certifications or experience, but many are accessible with a BSN and a nursing license.

1. Nurse Educator

Do you enjoy mentoring others or breaking down complex topics into simple concepts? You may want to consider becoming a nurse educator. These professionals teach in academic programs, train new nurses during clinical rotations, or lead professional development programs at healthcare facilities.

If this path sounds interesting to you, 奥颁鲍鈥檚 online MSN – Nurse Educator program helps you build on your knowledge and step into the classroom with confidence in as little as 16 months.

2. Healthcare Writer

If writing is one of your strong suits, working as a healthcare writer may be the right fit for you. Not to mention, is a growing area recognized by the CDC as key to public health outcomes.

As a healthcare writer, you鈥檒l be tasked with creating educational content for patients, providers, or the public. That might include blog articles, continuing education modules, patient handouts, or health-related news. This career offers the flexibility to work remotely and the opportunity to build a portfolio that informs and empowers others using your nursing expertise.

3. Nurse Researcher

design and conduct studies that improve patient care, healthcare delivery, and nursing practices. While many roles are based in hospitals, research institutes, or universities, these positions typically focus on data collection, study design, and analysis. With a BSN, you may qualify for research coordinator roles or work on teams that publish findings to advance healthcare science.

4. Legal Nurse Consultant

work alongside attorneys to provide expert insight into medical cases. This might include reviewing medical records, preparing case summaries, or offering expert testimony. Your clinical background can give you credibility in identifying standards of care, spotting documentation inconsistencies, and explaining complex medical scenarios in legal terms. For nurses with analytical skills and an interest in law, this can be a rewarding pivot.

5. Nurse Administrator

Nurse administrators oversee the business and operational side of healthcare. This might include managing budgets, staffing schedules, and policy compliance for departments or entire facilities. Though they鈥檙e rooted in healthcare, typically don鈥檛 provide patient care themselves. Instead, they focus on supporting nursing teams, improving efficiency, and ensuring high-quality care through leadership.

奥颁鲍鈥檚 Nurse Leader specialization (offered through our RN to MSN, MSN, and Post-Master鈥檚 Certificate programs) can help you take the next step if leadership is your goal.

6. Health Coach

guide individuals through wellness journeys by offering support with nutrition, fitness, stress management, and chronic disease prevention. If you’re passionate about helping others build healthy habits, this role combines personal connection with long-term impact.

Your clinical background allows you to provide evidence-based recommendations and tailor coaching to each client鈥檚 health needs.

7. Medical Sales Representative

serve as liaisons between medical product companies and healthcare providers. Whether you’re selling pharmaceuticals, equipment, or devices, your nursing background helps you communicate product benefits in a way providers understand. This career often comes with travel opportunities, and many nurses find it to be a dynamic alternative to clinical roles.

8. Utilization Management Nurse

assess medical records to determine whether treatments and services meet insurance criteria for medical necessity. These nurses often work for insurance companies or hospitals in office or remote settings. This analytical role is ideal for detail-oriented nurses who enjoy reviewing documentation, applying clinical guidelines, and ensuring efficient use of healthcare resources. Becoming a utilization management nurse allows you to leverage your BSN knowledge without stepping onto a unit.

9. Nurse Informaticist

Nurse informaticists (part of the broader field of ) blend nursing knowledge with data and technology to improve healthcare systems. They often work with electronic health records (EHRs), develop clinical workflows, and help implement tech solutions that make healthcare safer and more efficient.

If you’re tech-savvy and passionate about systems improvement, healthcare informatics can offer a future-facing career path rooted in healthcare innovation.

Start Your Non-Bedside Nursing Journey With a BSN

For natural leaders, educators at heart, or individuals looking to reduce the physical demands of patient-facing nursing, there are plenty of non-bedside roles that may offer exactly what you’re looking for. A BSN is an excellent starting point.

奥颁鲍鈥檚 Bachelor of Science in Nursing program helps equip students with a foundation in clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and hands-on experience. In as little as 39 months, the program is designed to prepare graduates for a wide range of careers 鈥 both at and beyond the bedside. Each term, the Nursing leadership team at 国产主播-Ontario hosts a Meet & Greet event, providing students with the opportunity to connect with faculty and leaders in a relaxed, welcoming environment. This term鈥檚 event featured cookies and milk and welcomed special guests Dean of Academics Dr. Chamberlain, and Dr. Dashti, Associate Dean of Academics. Students engaged in casual conversations with their academic leaders, helping to put faces to names and build stronger connections.

“The Meet and Greet events are hosted by nursing leadership and we invite a leader from another department to join every term. This provides a more casual environment to talk with students, meet them where they are and have fun,” WCU-Ontario Dean of Nursing Amie Howard shared.听

Howard noted the positive impact of the events, adding, “It’s been very refreshing to get out of the office and engage with our students. It gives students an opportunity to put a name to a face and get to know campus leaders beyond email. We hope over time, this will create a better sense of belonging and culture of togetherness for students.”听

For many students, the event served as a chance to engage with leadership outside the typical classroom setting, breaking down barriers and fostering stronger relationships.

“The genuine surprise and joy students showed when engaging with us really stood out. Interactions between students and Deans are usually formal and structured, so having the chance to connect in a relaxed, social setting was refreshing. It allowed us to get to know our students better鈥攁nd gave them a chance to see a different side of their Nursing Leadership Team,” WCU-Ontario Associate Director of Nursing Kevin Aquino shared.听

The Nursing Leadership team looks forward to continuing these events each term to strengthen connections and support student engagement.

WCU-Ontario BSN graduate gives speech during pinning ceremonty

At 国产主播鈥檚 January 2025 nursing pinning, student speaker Valerie A. took the stage with a message that resonated deeply with her fellow graduates: Remember your why.

Reflecting on the challenges they faced 鈥 rigorous exams, sleepless nights, and the weight of clinical responsibilities 鈥 Valerie acknowledged the perseverance that brought each student to this moment. But beyond academic struggles, she urged her peers to look inward and recall the deeper reason they chose this path in the first place.

For Valerie, that moment of clarity came in January 2019 when she stepped into an overcrowded emergency room for the first time.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic, where she performed CPR on 839 patients. What she saw 鈥 the patients sitting on floors with oxygen tanks, isolation tents overflowing, and nurses crying in supply rooms on their nonexistent breaks 鈥 left an indelible mark. These experiences, she said, put life鈥檚 everyday anxieties into perspective and ignited a calling that would change the trajectory of her life.听

“I walked into that ER as a blank slate, unsure of how this experience was going to change me, but within a few months, I found myself applying to 国产主播 on a path that would change the trajectory of my life forever,” she said.

Now, as she and her classmates step into the next phase of their careers, Valerie acknowledged that new challenges await. Nursing is more than a job 鈥 it is a profound responsibility. They will witness both the fragility of life and the joy of bringing new life into the world.

“We’re going to experience a new form of anxiety that will challenge our innermost tenacity. You may have the unimaginable duty to hold somebody’s hand in their final moments. You may also witness the joy of bringing a new life into the world, but ultimately, you will share in the raw vulnerability that patients experience when they walk into those acute care settings,” Valerie said. “I want you all to remember we’ve been chosen for this honor, and I want you all to remember your ‘why.’ We’re about to have a profound impact on the people around us, and it is our insatiable appetite to help others that have shaped us into the nurses who sit here today.”

Valerie closed her address with gratitude 鈥 thanking her family, professors, and fellow students for their support throughout the journey. And as she looked ahead to the future, she left her peers with a powerful reminder:

“We all had a dream stepping through the doors of 国产主播. Now, we鈥檝e achieved the ultimate accomplishment. Congratulations, January 2025 cohort 鈥 I can鈥檛 wait to see you all in the clinical setting.”

Kelly W., a 国产主播 alumna, veteran, and scholarship recipient, recently shared her inspiring journey.

At 17, Kelly made the decision to enlist in the military and had begun boot camp by the time she turned 18. Over the course of the next 12 years and two military tours, she developed invaluable skills and values that she later applied to her civilian career in healthcare.

In 2009, Kelly began her nursing education as part of 奥颁鲍鈥檚 first graduating class in the LPN to ADN pathway program. She went on to earn her bachelor of science in nursing from WCU-Ontario in 2013, eventually becoming a nurse practitioner and clinical instructor at her alma mater.

For the past five and a half years, Kelly has worked in a pediatric emergency room while teaching clinical pediatrics students at WCU. She is deeply committed to supporting students and advocating for children. Recently, she embarked on a new academic journey, pursuing an MBA with a focus on healthcare. In recognition of her contributions to the community, WCU awarded her a scholarship to support her continued education.

What led you to join the Army?

My childhood was not easy, and I didn鈥檛 think I could support myself financially to get an education. While in high school, I joined the ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) and learned about the military. I joined the U.S. Army Reserves in 2002 in a medical unit. I reenlisted and did two tours overseas. Overall, I stayed for 12 years, so I enjoyed it.

How did the Army lead you to nursing?

I was working with a lot of medics, nurses and people in the healthcare field. I wanted to continue on and do more than just screening and triaging. I deployed in 2004 and was in the field. I came back and worked as an LVN but wanted to return to get my RN.

Why did you choose to attend WCU?

I saw they had the LVN to RN bridge program, and they were a GI school. Coming from the military, I wanted to use my benefits. I was happy the university was supporting veterans and was accredited. Given my background, I was able to grow in my career.

How do the skills you gained in the military impact your work as a nurse?

I live by Army values every day: selfless service, integrity, honor. I love it. I鈥檓 disciplined now because of my time in the military. I don鈥檛 take the little things for granted. I鈥檓 also reliable and responsible 鈥 I鈥檝e stayed in most of my jobs for a long time because I feel devoted.

What made you want to return to teach at WCU?

When I graduated as a pediatric nurse practitioner, I got a job working in the pediatric emergency department. I also applied to teach at WCU. I love what I do and I wanted the students to realize what it is to take care of kids. Being in the emergency department, I felt I could bring a new perspective.

How did you run your clinical sessions as an instructor?

The feedback I often got was that they loved that I was so hands-on. I would take them to the emergency department and if there were baby catheters or IVs, I always volunteered to do it with my students so I could teach them the skills. They were grateful and excited to accomplish something with a patient. We would huddle at the end of the clinical and they would discuss their cases and feel proud of what they did.

Why are you #WCUProud?

I feel proud that I am recognized as an alumnus. I think it鈥檚 great that there鈥檚 unity within the university. I remember being there, and we had a veteran group. There was a lot of camaraderie. I also want to say thank you to WCU for continuing to support my career progression. I feel a family connection with the university, given the longevity I鈥檝e had with them as both a student and a professor. I feel honored to be a recipient of this scholarship.
