After a decade of saving lives in emergency rooms and trauma units, Melanie H. has returned to where her nursing journey began 鈥 this time, as a professor.

A two-time graduate of 国产主播, Melanie earned her BSN in 2017 and later completed her MSN in education. Now, she鈥檚 teaching the next generation of nurses at the same institution that once transformed her from a struggling student into a confident healthcare professional.

鈥淚 was a C student, not strong in math or science 鈥 and I became an A student,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nyone can do it if your heart鈥檚 in it.鈥

Before nursing, Melanie was a project manager raising a family. Her career path changed dramatically the day her 12-year-old son nearly drowned. She watched in awe as nurses and hospital staff worked together to save his life.

鈥淭hat was my moment,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his is what I want to do. I want to make that difference.鈥

Gaining Real-World Experience in Trauma and ER Nursing

Melanie embraced the intensity of nursing, gaining hands-on experience in ERs, trauma units, dialysis centers, county hospitals, and correctional facilities. But even early on, she felt drawn to education.

鈥淓ven in nursing school I said, 鈥業 want to be a teacher,鈥欌 she recalled. 鈥淪tudents asked me to tutor. Professors had me run the final review.鈥

Teaching at 国产主播: A Full-Circle Moment

Her passion for education has come full circle. In March, she officially joined the WCU faculty. 鈥淚鈥檓 loving it,鈥 she said. 鈥淛ust seeing their excitement when they learn something new and I get to play a part in giving them that knowledge.鈥

Preparing Future Nurses with Advanced Training Technology

Melanie takes pride in preparing her students for real-world healthcare environments, especially through advanced technology. 鈥淲e didn鈥檛 have all this tech,鈥 she said. 鈥淣ow students train on real systems 鈥 Omnicell, charting software 鈥 they鈥檙e prepared. It gives them an edge.鈥

The Support That Helped Her Succeed 鈥 Now Passed On

She also understands firsthand the power of student support. 鈥淔rom Day One, it was personal. Professors care,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e not just a number here 鈥 you are set up to succeed.鈥

Looking Ahead: Giving Back Through Education

For Melanie, teaching at 国产主播 is more than a job, it鈥檚 a legacy. 鈥淚 want to share what I gained and what I received when I was a student,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 giving back what was given to me.鈥

And she鈥檚 not done yet. Melanie plans to pursue a doctorate through WCU so she can eventually teach in the MSN program. 鈥淢y journey wasn鈥檛 easy, but I succeeded because of West Coast,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey support you from start to finish.鈥

国产主播 Ranks No. 1 on Multiple 2026 Best Colleges for Nursing Lists by Niche

Niche has recognized 国产主播 on several of its 2026 Best Colleges for Nursing lists at the local, statewide, and nationwide level, earning multiple No. 1 rankings. The campuses that were ranked included 奥颁鲍鈥檚 Richardson, Texas and Miami, Florida campuses.

    • Best Colleges for Nursing in America (#1 of 780)
    • Best Colleges for Nursing in Texas (#1 of 44)
    • Best Value Colleges in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area (#1 of 13)
    • Best Colleges for Nursing in America (#4 of 780)
    • Best Colleges for Nursing in Florida (#1 of 43)

Designed to compare top nursing schools throughout the U.S., Niche鈥檚 rankings are based on rigorous analysis of school data from reputable sources, as well as student reviews from .

How Are the Rankings Calculated?

Here are a few things to know about how the Best Colleges for Nursing rankings are determined, according to Niche鈥檚 :

Data is collected and vetted: Niche gathers key statistics from a variety of sources such as the U.S. Department of Education and National Science Foundation. After that, rigorous checks are conducted to ensure that the data is accurate. Data is checked for outliers or inaccurate values and adjusted as needed.

Student feedback is considered: Niche incorporates feedback from its database of nearly 5,000 reviews from college students asking about everything from instructors to campus safety to student morale and more.

Ranking factors are selected and weighted: Niche selects ranking factors that help strike the right balance between statistical rigor and practical relevance. Niche then creates a standardized score (a 鈥渮-score鈥) for each factor at each college, which allows for measurement against the average and easier comparison between colleges. Each factor is weighted based on Niche鈥檚 research, and a final score is calculated.

Eligible colleges receive a ranking: Colleges that are missing key data needed for ranking or that do not meet other criteria are either excluded from ranking and grading, or they鈥檙e only graded and not ranked. Those that have data for all the necessary ranking factors and also have at least 500 full-time undergraduate students qualify for both a grade and numerical ranking.

For Debbie Lee S., balancing the demands of nursing school while raising children was no small feat. As a full-time student and full-time mom, Debbie Lee brought a level of maturity and resilience to her studies that helped her stand out in a competitive field.

鈥淎s a mother, a wife, and an employee, we also need to be recognized,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 believe this field of nursing and wanting to pursue your career in nursing 鈥 there is a place for us.鈥

That place, for her, was 国产主播-Texas, where she leaned into a strong support system and found her confidence. 鈥淭he foundation was fitting into West Coast, and I fit in perfect here,鈥 Debbie Lee said. 鈥淚 got the support that I needed here to fulfill my dreams and my children鈥檚 dreams.鈥

From Clinicals to Confidence

Debbie Lee鈥檚 previous work as a patient care technician gave her a leg up when entering clinicals and simulation training but even with experience, there was still a learning curve.

鈥淚n the beginning, SIM was like, 鈥極K, this is so weird,鈥欌 she said with a laugh. 鈥淏ut after a few rotations, it warmed me up. I let go. I talk as if the patient was actually a real patient… Now when I鈥檓 at clinicals, I move like an expert.鈥

She credited her comfort and preparedness to the instructors who guided her through SIM labs, helping her transform classroom learning into clinical confidence.

Persistence Pays Off

Debbie Lee鈥檚 job search was anything but easy. After attending over 20 interviews with little success, she took matters into her own hands.

鈥淚 said to myself, 鈥業鈥檓 going to step out and I鈥檓 going to be Debbie, and I鈥檓 going to be bold,鈥欌 she said.

That boldness paid off. By the end of her clinical rotations, she had multiple interviews at hospitals. One even came from a chance elevator conversation with a manager who later conducted her formal job interview.

鈥淚t didn鈥檛 feel like an interview,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was more like she鈥檚 getting to know me.鈥

Looking Ahead

With a new job, a soon-to-close house, and plans to eventually pursue her master鈥檚 degree, Debbie Lee鈥檚 journey is far from over. But for now, she鈥檚 enjoying the moment 鈥 and encouraging others to believe in themselves too.

鈥淵ou may not see it right now,鈥 she said, 鈥渂ut the support is there every step of the way.鈥

Built-In Support Through Roommates

What started as a housing scramble quickly became a support system that keeps Kelly T. and Maxlyn S. grounded through the intensity of the Master of Physician Assistant program. The two 国产主播-Texas MPA students, who met through a GroupMe spreadsheet before ever stepping on campus, now share not only an apartment but also study sessions, clinical goals, and even matching sweatshirts.

鈥淚 wouldn鈥檛 change anything at all,鈥 Kelly said. 鈥淚t really鈥 motivates me to get stuff done.鈥

Maxlyn agreed the arrangement made the hard days lighter.

鈥淚t has been really nice to be able to go home and know that I鈥檓 living with people who know what I鈥檓 going through,鈥 she said.

Why They Chose the PA Path

Maxlyn said she always wanted to be in healthcare and discovered the PA role after a patient told her she was 鈥渢heir sunshine鈥 on the worst day of their life 鈥 an encounter that stuck with her.

鈥淚 just fell in love with the PA program because you can really spend a lot of time with your patients,鈥 she said.

Kelly once planned on medical school before shadowing in an emergency trauma bay. 鈥淚 saw a PA鈥 put in a chest tube,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know that PAs could do that鈥 I researched more and was like wait that鈥檚 so cool.鈥

Campus Culture and Community at WCU Texas

Both said word-of-mouth and an on-campus visit sealed their decisions. 鈥淚 remember walking in and meeting all these people and just feeling鈥 at home,鈥 Maxlyn said. Kelly echoed that the program鈥檚 culture starts with people like Taylor Allen in admissions. 鈥淪he was just a light,鈥 she said.

The two also praised the cohort鈥檚 diversity of experience and small-class feel. 鈥淓veryone has so many different experiences鈥 everyone has their own niche,鈥 Kelly said.

Career Goals After Graduation

Kelly said she hoped to practice in a small town and give back to an underserved community, possibly in ER or family medicine. Maxlyn, who minored in nutrition, said she wanted to elevate nutritional literacy among patients and peers. Both lit up talking about PA Week, clinical match day, and representing WCU at competitions.

鈥淎t the end of the day鈥 if you really want to be here and you have the work ethic and the determination to get there you will,鈥 Kelly said.

Savanna S., a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at 国产主播-Texas, didn鈥檛 just learn how to become a nurse 鈥 she discovered how to believe in herself, overcome fear, and thrive in a supportive academic environment.

Choosing a Nursing Career Despite Fear of Failure

Savanna began her nursing journey in January 2023, starting with general education courses before diving into her nursing core curriculum that August. Although passionate about healthcare, she admits the transition was intimidating.

鈥淚 think I was nervous because I was afraid to fail, like most students,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut that鈥檚 one of the biggest lessons I learned here 鈥 you need to fail so you can learn from those experiences.鈥

Her story reflects a powerful truth for many nursing students: growth comes not only from success but also from perseverance through setbacks.

Real-World Nursing Training in WCU-Texas Simulation Center

Savanna credits 国产主播-Texas鈥 simulation center and clinical training resources for helping her develop hands-on skills and clinical confidence.

鈥淭he simulation center really makes you feel like you’re taking care of an actual patient,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the best real-world, hands-on experience you can get.鈥

In addition to simulation labs, she took full advantage of tutoring services and support from WCU nursing instructors, helping her stay on track throughout the intensive BSN program.聽

Developing a Passion for Critical Care and Med-Surg Nursing

Through clinical rotations, Savanna discovered a strong interest in critical care nursing and medical-surgical (med-surg) nursing 鈥 high-pressure fields that demand quick thinking and compassionate care.

鈥淵es, it鈥檚 scary having a person鈥檚 life in your hands,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut I鈥檓 here, and I have the knowledge and information I need to help them.鈥

Supportive Nursing Cohort Helped Her Succeed

A key part of Savanna鈥檚 success came from the support she found within her nursing cohort 鈥 a tight-knit group of students who encouraged each other through exams, clinicals, and everyday challenges.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really important to have that support and be with a group that lifts you up,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hether it was failing an exam or something we experienced at clinical 鈥 we talked through it and got through it together.鈥

What鈥檚 Next: Graduate Nursing School and CRNA Aspirations

Looking ahead, Savanna plans to continue her education by pursuing a master of science in nursing 鈥 with goals of becoming a nurse practitioner or applying to a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) program. She鈥檚 even considering returning to 国产主播 for graduate school.

鈥淚 love this place because they gave me an opportunity and an environment where I could become who I dreamed of being.鈥

The 国产主播-Texas MPA program recently hosted its third annual Capstone Symposium, celebrating the achievements of students completing their clinical-year research projects. The event highlighted the program鈥檚 growing partnerships with local healthcare organizations and showcased the next generation of compassionate, evidence-driven providers.

Bridging Research and Real-World Impact

What began as a student-led research showcase three years ago has now evolved into a statewide collaboration. For the first time, each student project was supported by local community partners, known as Capstone Sites, allowing students to address real healthcare needs across Texas.

鈥淭his year was the first year the projects were focused on and supported by local partners,鈥 said Assistant Professor Jerrod T., who has led the Capstone Symposium since its inception in 2023. 鈥淪tudents worked through a needs assessment and helped their sites answer specific questions or collect data on topics that were of dual interest to both the students and the site.鈥

Assistant Professor Katie D. emphasized how this shift deepened student learning and community engagement. 鈥淭oday, we intentionally collaborate with our clinical partners to develop projects that foster meaningful partnerships and address real needs within our communities,鈥 she said.

Growth, Confidence, and Professionalism

This year鈥檚 symposium featured 46 students, divided into small groups, each presenting their findings to faculty, peers, and local site representatives. The projects represented a diverse range of research areas, from diabetes education in minority populations to emerging studies in venom-based treatments.

鈥淭he energy in the room was electric,鈥 Katie said. 鈥淭he faculty were beaming with pride, and students carried themselves with confidence and professionalism.鈥

Jerrod echoed the sentiment, noting how much the symposium has grown since its early days. 鈥淎fter the first year, we started collecting data and faculty feedback to improve each event,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his year, we had more campus staff, faculty, and students attend, and we even added a Zoom component so family, friends, and site supervisors could join in virtually.鈥

Research That Reaches Beyond the Classroom

Each capstone project reflects the MPA program鈥檚 mission of hands-on, community-centered learning. Students developed their research questions, obtained IRB approval, and collected and analyzed data; all while working alongside clinical partners throughout Texas.

鈥淭hese projects provide valuable data and insights that help clinical sites identify gaps in care, implement quality improvements, and strengthen partnerships between the program and local healthcare systems,鈥 Katie explained.

One highlight came from a student who presented research on a childhood disease they personally live with – connecting personal experience with professional passion.

For Jerrod, that connection between research and compassion is what the event is all about. 鈥淲e need more strong clinicians comfortable doing hands-on research,鈥 he said. 鈥淢y hope is that through this project, some of these students will continue research in their future practice.鈥

Looking Ahead

As the Class of 2025 puts the finishing touches on their capstone papers, they鈥檙e also preparing to enter the workforce. Jerrod and Katie both hope the event inspired the Class of 2026, who volunteered during the symposium, to carry forward the same spirit of inquiry and service.

鈥淭he symposium is the pinnacle event where we get to highlight the hands-on experiences the students have had with our community partners,鈥 Jerrod said. 鈥淥ur students are the hands and feet of healthcare in the community and surrounding areas. If I can help be part of that through the Capstone project, I鈥檓 all for it.鈥

RN to PA: Transitioning From Registered Nurse to Physician Assistant

There are many reasons registered nurses (RNs) make the transition to physician assistant (PA) roles. Whether you鈥檙e looking for greater autonomy in your clinical responsibilities, more traditional work hours, or higher levels of compensation, the switch could be helpful for achieving new career goals.

Transitioning from an RN to a PA can be a natural transition considering that both roles focus on direct patient care and can be carried out across a diverse range of healthcare settings. Both types of professionals play an essential role in helping patients maintain optimal health and wellness 鈥 but the key difference is the scope of their practice, with PAs having a when it comes to diagnosis and treatment.

Before we dive into how an RN can become a PA, it鈥檚 important to understand the differences between the two roles.

RN vs. PA Roles: What鈥檚 the Difference?

RN roles are focused on direct patient care, handling duties such as taking and monitoring vitals, assessing and documenting patients鈥 conditions, and administering medications and treatments.

Meanwhile, PAs also perform direct patient care, but they have duties that are closer to those that a doctor can perform. Under the supervision of a physician, PAs can perform tasks such as ordering diagnostics tests, diagnosing illnesses and injuries, and prescribing medications and treatments. The amount of physician supervision that is required for a PA varies by state.

For a deeper dive into common RN and PA duties, here鈥檚 a side-by-side comparison based on information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

may include:

  • Evaluating and monitoring patients鈥 conditions
  • Documenting symptoms and medical histories
  • Administering medications and treatments
  • Establishing patient care plans or adding information to existing plans
  • Coordinating with the patient鈥檚 healthcare team, including doctors and other healthcare professionals
  • Using and monitoring medical equipment
  • Assisting with diagnostic tests and analyzing results
  • Educating patients and their families about how to manage illness or injuries following treatment

Some registered nurses may also oversee licensed vocational nurses (also known as licensed practical nurses), nursing assistants, and/or home health aides.

may include:

  • Reviewing patients鈥 medical histories
  • Performing patient examinations
  • Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, such as blood tests or x-rays
  • Diagnosing injuries or illnesses
  • Prescribing medications
  • Treating patients, such as administering immunizations, setting broken bones, or applying stitches
  • Educating and advising patients and their loved ones on various healthcare issues and needs
  • Evaluating and documenting the patient鈥檚 progress
  • Staying up-to-date on the latest treatments to help connect patients with quality patient care
  • For both RNs and PAs, their exact duties will depend on the specific healthcare setting and specialty area in which they work. A few examples of specialty areas may include family or internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency care, surgical care, oncology, and mental healthcare.
  • Additionally, in rural and underserved communities, it鈥檚 common for PAs to act as primary care providers, such as in clinics where the supervising physician is only in the clinic a couple days a week.

RN and PA Educational Requirements

Another big point of differentiation between an RN and a PA is the level of education that鈥檚 required for each role.

Degree requirements for registered nurses

Registered nurses typically need to complete either a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and then pass the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN) in order to in their state.

A standard associate degree program takes two years while a standard bachelor鈥檚 degree program takes four years, though time to completion for a BSN or ADN can be shorter or longer depending on the program pace. For instance, 奥颁鲍鈥檚 BSN program is accelerated and can be completed in a little over 3 years. Keep in mind that you could shorten the time to completion for your bachelor鈥檚 degree if you already have an ADN or if you have enough working experience as a licensed or registered nurse.

Another big point of differentiation between an RN and a PA is the level of education that鈥檚 required for each role.

Considering prerequisites and clinical experience requirements

Many physician assistant master鈥檚 programs require applicants to have bachelor鈥檚 degrees in such as biology or health sciences, or to meet certain criteria regarding coursework in the sciences. Healthcare experience may also be a requirement or a point of differentiation for program applicants

To give an example, 国产主播鈥檚 Master of Physician Assistant (MPA) programs require applicants to have completed certain prerequisite courses in the sciences and to meet a certain threshold for their cumulative biology/chemistry/physics (BCP) grade point average (3.0 or better for the California program and 2.7 or better for the Texas program).

Additionally, applicants to 奥颁鲍鈥檚 California MPA program must provide documentation showing that they completed 500 hours of observation, volunteer and/or work in a clinical setting. While the 奥颁鲍鈥檚 Texas MPA program does have this requirement, showing such experience is recommended in order to give the applicant a competitive advantage. Learn more about the admission requirements for the California MPA program and Texas MPA program at 国产主播.

Transitioning from an RN to a PA

While it is not common to see educational programs that focus on transitioning registered nurses into physical assistants, RNs who follow the next steps for education, training, and licensure can achieve their goal of becoming a PA.

If you鈥檙e a nurse with BSN, you already have a strong educational foundation in the sciences as well as professional healthcare experience that can help you stand out as a PA program candidate. You may just need to fill some gaps to ensure you meet all the requirements to apply for your desired program. And if you don鈥檛 already have a BSN, earning your bachelor鈥檚 degree can be your first step to pursuing your new career path.

Here are some steps you may need to complete if you鈥檙e a nurse who wants to apply for a PA master鈥檚 program:

  • Research physician assistant master鈥檚 programs and decide which ones you want to apply to. This can help ensure you鈥檙e working toward meeting the correct criteria and prerequisites, as eligibility and admission requirements vary by program.
  • Earn a bachelor鈥檚 degree in the sciences, which can include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. A BSN can be especially ideal if you want to work as an RN for a few years to build up your experience and then study to become a physician assistant in the future. If you already have an ADN, you may have a head start.
  • Complete the necessary prerequisites and maintain a high GPA in your science-based coursework. This can help ensure you meet the admission requirements for your desired program and help you stand out from other candidates. If you already completed your bachelor鈥檚 degree, you may need to take more coursework to fill any educational gaps.
  • Leverage your clinical experience. As an RN, you will have the advantage of extensive direct patient experience, which can help you stand out as a PA program applicant.

Once you complete a PA program, you will need to pass the and apply for licensure in your state. Note that licensure requirements vary by state, so make sure to thoroughly research the process ahead of time.

From July 21鈥25, the WCU-Texas campus united in a week-long effort to benefit the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, a public charitable foundation that channels resources directly to local nonprofits helping residents recover. • A Boost from Caf茅 Moore: The campus coffee shop stepped up with a generous $1,000 donation, setting the tone for the week.聽

鈥淭his is what the WCU spirit is all about 鈥 community, compassion, and action,鈥 WCU-Texas executive director Mitch Thomas said. 鈥淲e are proud to stand alongside local leaders and organizations working tirelessly to restore our community.鈥

Beyond the Bedside: 9 Non-Bedside Nursing Careers You Can Pursue With a BSN

Looking to earn your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) but not sure if traditional bedside care is the path for you? You’re not alone and there are, in fact, a variety of rewarding non-bedside nursing career options.

Many nursing students and practicing RNs find that while they love healthcare, they鈥檙e drawn to roles that don鈥檛 involve direct, hands-on patient care. Whether you’re looking for a different pace, reduced physical demands, or a way to apply your clinical expertise in new settings, a BSN can open the door to a range of meaningful, non-bedside nursing careers.

Keep reading if you’re curious about where your BSN degree can take you beyond traditional patient care roles.

What Are Non-Bedside Nursing Careers?

Non-bedside nursing jobs are roles that allow you to leverage your clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and healthcare experience without providing direct patient care. These careers span fields like education, informatics, writing, legal consulting, and health technology. While they may be lesser known than bedside nurses, these roles are equally important in the healthcare field.

These roles can offer flexibility and stability 鈥 with some offering the ability to work remotely 鈥 making them a great option for those just starting out or making a career pivot.

9 Non-Bedside Nursing Careers You Can Pursue With a BSN

The following careers allow you to put your BSN to work in non-clinical settings. Some may require additional certifications or experience, but many are accessible with a BSN and a nursing license.

1. Nurse Educator

This career offers the flexibility to work remotely and the opportunity to build a portfolio that informs and empowers others using your nursing expertise.

3. Nurse Researcher

design and conduct studies that improve patient care, healthcare delivery, and nursing practices. While many roles are based in hospitals, research institutes, or universities, these positions typically focus on data collection, study design, and analysis. With a BSN, you may qualify for research coordinator roles or work on teams that publish findings to advance healthcare science.

4. Legal Nurse Consultant

5. Nurse Administrator

Nurse administrators oversee the business and operational side of healthcare. This might include managing budgets, staffing schedules, and policy compliance for departments or entire facilities. Though they鈥檙e rooted in healthcare, typically don鈥檛 provide patient care themselves. Instead, they focus on supporting nursing teams, improving efficiency, and ensuring high-quality care through leadership.

6. Health Coach

7. Medical Sales Representative

Becoming a utilization management nurse allows you to leverage your BSN knowledge without stepping onto a unit.

9. Nurse Informaticist

Nurse informaticists (part of the broader field of ) blend nursing knowledge with data and technology to improve healthcare systems. They often work with electronic health records (EHRs), develop clinical workflows, and help implement tech solutions that make healthcare safer and more efficient.
