What Are On-Site Intensives?
WCU鈥檚 online MSN and Post-Master鈥檚 Certificate programs blend online coursework with practical skill development. The practical part of your education begins with two mandatory on-site intensives (OSIs) that bring you to campus for focused, hands-on clinical practice.
These immersive weekends are designed to help you build the essential skills you need as a nurse practitioner鈥攆rom conducting physical assessments to working through real-world clinical scenarios alongside your classmates and expert faculty.
OSIs are a key part of your FNP education, bridging the gap between online coursework, clinical rotations, and FNP practice.

What to Expect During Your Intensives

OSIs are designed to help you connect theory and practice鈥攁nd connect with your classmates and faculty. You鈥檒l have opportunities to work in groups as well as one-on-one, and you鈥檒l be able to ask questions and receive direct feedback from instructors about your approach. Each intensive is unique, covering competencies aligned with where you are in the program.
OSI #1: Preparing for Clinical Rotations
Your first OSI takes place during the second semester of your MSN program as part of the class .
This first OSI helps you build the diagnostic reasoning, advanced assessment capabilities, and direct patient care skills you鈥檒l need to begin your FNP clinical rotations. Learning takes place in a collaborative, hands-on environment led by WCU faculty.
Activities may include:
- Clinical case analysis
- Assessment procedures
- Charting and documentation for primary care
- Interpreting X-rays and blood work
- Practicing primary care consultation and patient education
You may also complete interprofessional learning sessions about medication reconciliation or prescribing practices alongside WCU Doctor of Pharmacy students.
OSI #2: Transition to Practice
The second OSI takes place during the final semester of your MSN program as part of the course . It鈥檚 designed to help you integrate what you鈥檝e learned over the course of your studies and during your clinicals so you graduate ready to pursue entry-level FNP roles.
The second OSI covers additional clinical skills, as well as:
- Regulatory and scope-of-practice requirements for FNPs
- Evidence-based patient care plan development and coordination
- Professional FNP mindset development
- Specialized knowledge and skills for independent practice
