]]>Starting nursing school is a big milestone and it often comes with a mix of excitement, pressure, and questions you didn鈥檛 know you had. You鈥檒l be learning a wealth of new material, adapting to your academic routine, and getting your first glimpse of life in the field of healthcare. It鈥檚 a challenge, but also the beginning of a career built on purpose.
Whether you鈥檙e pursuing an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), this guide will walk you through what to expect in your first year of nursing school so you can learn with confidence.
In nursing school, your first semester lays the foundation for everything that follows. From orientation to your first exams, you鈥檒l be adjusting to a new academic pace. You鈥檒l also meet your professors, review program expectations, and start forming connections with classmates 鈥 many of whom may become your go-to study partners.
During orientation, you鈥檒l walk through the curriculum, lab requirements, and safety procedures for your clinicals. Once classes begin, your schedule will fill quickly with lectures, introductory labs, and assigned readings.
There鈥檚 a learning curve, especially as you adjust to new terminology. It may feel overwhelming at first, but this is where you establish your routine and where your clinical competence begins to grow.
Yes, but keep it simple at first. It can be tempting to buy everything you think you might need, but starting with the essentials is the smartest approach. As you progress through your program, you can always add more based on what your instructors recommend.
Here are five things you need to have on hand during your first year in nursing school:
Starting with these essentials means you鈥檒l be well-prepared to begin your first semester without overspending or overpacking.
During your first year, you鈥檒l lay the groundwork for everything that comes next. Most of your courses will focus on the science behind nursing, helping you understand why the body works the way it does and what happens when it doesn鈥檛.
While every nursing program is different, your curriculum will generally include:
Many programs also introduce topics like medical ethics, patient communication, and documentation early on, so you can start developing the habits and mindset of a professional nurse from day one.
Most nursing programs follow a structured, but intensive, weekly schedule that includes lectures, labs, clinicals, and study time. Your days will also vary: some will be packed with back-to-back classes, while others will give you more flexibility.
In a typical week, you can expect:
Lectures may take place in larger classrooms or smaller, seminar-style settings, while labs are usually more hands-on and done in smaller groups. Case-based learning is also common, especially in preparation for questions. The pace can be intense, so having a reliable planner or scheduling tool will make a big difference in staying organized.
In most programs, you鈥檒l begin clinical rotations in your second semester, but some schools may introduce you to a clinical setting even earlier. At WCU, students begin their clinicals in the first term once they complete general education courses. This is when everything 鈥渃licks,鈥 where lectures, textbooks, and simulations finally start to make sense.
Remember that while these fast-paced experiences can be demanding, they can be one of the most rewarding parts of your first year. Your clinical rotations are also the perfect time to start exploring which areas of nursing best fit your future.
The first year of nursing school can be both academically and emotionally demanding. You may find yourself constantly adjusting to a faster pace, a larger volume of material, and a new level of responsibility 鈥 both in the classroom and in clinical settings.
Success depends not only on how much time you spend studying, but also on how well you manage your schedule, apply new information, and care for your overall well-being. That鈥檚 why building strong habits early in your education is so important. With the right approach, you can consistently handle the demands of your program and move forward with clarity and confidence.
Your first year will challenge you to stay focused, organized, and tenacious, but a few smart strategies can help you confidently stay on track. Here are some practical tips to guide you through your program:
Define what success looks like to you. Whether it鈥檚 maintaining a specific GPA, mastering clinical skills, or preparing for a long-term specialty, setting measurable goals helps guide your daily priorities.
Also, make sure the goals you set are realistic, as setting the bar too high too quickly can lead to burnout.
As a first-year nursing student, your schedule will fill up fast. Between lectures, labs, clinicals, and maybe even working full-time, you may quickly become overwhelmed. Create a routine that works for you and stick to it. Use planning tools like apps, calendars, whiteboards, or sticky notes to make sure you stay on track.
While you鈥檙e in nursing school, try not to cut corners on sleep. Pulling all-nighters might seem productive, but they鈥檒l wear down your focus, memory, and mood. Aim for at least eight hours of sleep each night to ensure you perform at your best.
Plus, getting into a healthy sleep routine now will also make it easier to adjust to rotating shifts once you start working as a registered nurse.
It鈥檚 tempting to rely on caffeine and vending machine snacks, especially on busy days, but your nutrition directly affects how well you concentrate, retain information, and recover from stress.
Balanced meals help you stay energized and engaged during long lectures or clinical shifts. Regularly include fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains to support both your physical and mental health.
You don鈥檛 have to have it down to a science, but exercise should be part of your routine. It鈥檚 proven that and boost your energy.
If you鈥檙e pressed for time, consider taking longer walks between classes or doing a stretching routine at home. Small efforts can go a long way in keeping you focused and balanced.
Don鈥檛 wait until you鈥檙e at your limit to rest and enjoy your time off from school. Taking consistent breaks can help you recharge and support long-term motivation.
Try scheduling things on a daily or weekly basis, like watching your favorite show, catching a new movie, or enjoying lunch with a friend. Read more blog posts from our Decompression Session series for tips.

]]>Maria T. always knew she wanted to work in healthcare, but it wasn鈥檛 until later in life that she found the courage to pursue her dream. A former property manager with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Maria made the leap into nursing with determination 鈥 and hasn鈥檛 looked back since.
Her passion for women鈥檚 health runs deep. Surrounded by strong women in her own family, Maria was driven by a desire to be an advocate, especially for women of color who often feel unheard in medical settings.
鈥淚 come from a big line of women. I鈥檓 the middle one of three sisters, I have two nieces, and I know there鈥檚 a lot of disparities when a healthcare provider doesn鈥檛 listen to you as a woman,鈥 she said.
That personal motivation became professional purpose when she joined Memorial Healthcare System as a mother-baby nurse. In this postpartum specialty, Maria supports both newborns and mothers in the first critical days after delivery 鈥 a setting where joy can quickly turn into an emergency.
鈥淪ome things can happen in that setting that force you to apply those critical thinking skills and act quick on your feet,鈥 she said.
Maria鈥檚 journey to her ideal job wasn鈥檛 without its challenges. While pursuing her BSN at 国产主播-Miami, she balanced full-time work and a long commute. But support from faculty and her own fierce determination helped her push through.
鈥淥ne of my professors told me, 鈥楬ow you apply now is how you’re going to be out in the field, so I need you to apply your best and take it even a step forward,鈥欌€ she said.
Her resilience was especially tested during the COVID-19 pandemic. But even then, Maria stayed focused 鈥 logging in for virtual classes and staying connected through skills labs and simulations.
鈥淚f you鈥檙e truly passionate about caring for others鈥 then don鈥檛 stop, don鈥檛 quit,鈥 she said.

Their inspiring story recently captured attention during National Volunteer Week and was featured by NBC 4 News and local , proudly highlighting their connection to 国产主播.
Currently pursuing their bachelor of science in nursing degree at WCU-LA, Zoie and Midori are supplementing their classroom learning with hands-on experience as part of Cedars-Sinai鈥檚 Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) program. The initiative allows aspiring healthcare professionals to gain firsthand exposure to nursing roles, providing opportunities to work alongside clinical teams and connect directly with patients.听
Despite the challenges of a rigorous academic schedule, the sisters rise before dawn 鈥 waking at 3:30 a.m. in their Torrance home 鈥 to make it to Cedars-Sinai by 5 a.m. for their volunteer shift.
鈥淭hey give of themselves incredibly,鈥 Cedars-Sinai volunteer services director Michele Prince听said. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e getting up way before dawn and coming all the way here to serve the hospital.鈥澨
On separate nursing floors, Zoie and Midori assist with essential tasks such as stocking supplies, preparing workstations, and responding to patient needs. But for them, the experience is more than just volunteer work 鈥 it鈥檚 a calling.
鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 even feel like a job or a duty,鈥 Zoie said. 鈥淚t makes us feel good to be here every time.鈥
Despite the sisters鈥 alarms going off before the sun rises, they are continually reminded of their mission to serve others in need at the hospital.
鈥淭hey are here and they need our help,鈥 Midori explained.
The sisters, often mistaken for one another in their matching uniforms, have become familiar and beloved faces on their respective floors. While they embrace the occasional mix-up, they鈥檙e quick to clarify identities:
鈥淚 make sure to say, 鈥業鈥檓 Midori, and I have a twin named Zoie,鈥欌€ Midori laughed.
Their time as volunteers is not only building their clinical confidence, but also nurturing a compassionate, patient-centered mindset.
鈥淚 love going into patient rooms and asking how they are doing and if they need anything,鈥 Zoie said.
鈥淚鈥檓 pretty sure it鈥檚 going to help me be more resilient and more attentive to patient needs,鈥 Midori said.
As they continue their nursing education at WCU-Los Angeles, the sisters dream of returning to Cedars-Sinai as registered nurses.
鈥淭here are 1,200 Cedars-Sinai employees who were once volunteers,鈥 Prince noted. 鈥淎nd perhaps Zoie and Midori will be among them one day.鈥

The (HRSA) reports a growing shortage of mental health professionals, making the role of a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) more critical than ever.
WCU Online offers several path options to help students become a PMHNP. A traditional MSN program like our PMHNP MSN track requires a BSN. 奥颁鲍鈥檚 PMHNP programs and tracks prepare nurses to take on these rewarding responsibilities through a combination of online coursework, hands-on intensives, and clinical experience.
Accreditation is a measure that a PMHNP program meets rigorous academic and professional standards. All of 奥颁鲍鈥檚 PMHNP programs are accredited by the (CCNE), an accrediting body that promotes quality nursing education in the United States.
Upon completing 奥颁鲍鈥檚 PMHNP Post-Master鈥檚 Certificate or PMHNP MSN, graduates are eligible to sit for the (ANCC) PMHNP certification exam. Passing this exam is a key step toward licensure, as required by state boards governed by the (NCSBN).
The (ACEN) also plays a role in maintaining quality standards for nursing education, ensuring that programs like 奥颁鲍鈥檚 PMHNP certificate adequately prepare students for advanced practice roles.

]]>For many students pursuing a master of physician assistant degree, clinical rotations are an intense and transformative chapter, packed with hands-on learning, high stakes, and life-changing moments. For Aza D., a 国产主播-Center for Graduate Studies MPA student, one recent OB-GYN rotation became far more than just a learning experience. It became a powerful reminder of why she chose this path in the first place.听
Aza鈥檚 journey to becoming a PA was anything but typical. An immigrant who arrived in the U.S. at age 12, Aza started working in healthcare at just 17. Over the years, she moved through the ranks, starting as a volunteer in medical billing and eventually becoming a director of clinical operations. Despite her rising administrative career, she knew her heart belonged at the bedside, not behind a desk.
That clarity came during a personal low point 鈥 navigating a divorce, raising two children, and feeling unfulfilled. A chance conversation with a compassionate physician assistant during a routine medical visit opened her eyes to a new possibility.
鈥淲hat do you want to do?鈥 the PA asked.
鈥淚 really like patient care,鈥 Aza replied.
And just like that, her course shifted. She went back to school, earned a second bachelor鈥檚 degree, and pursued her MPH at 国产主播, followed by her current MPA degree 鈥 all while working and parenting.听
But it was during her most recent OB-GYN rotation that her resolve was truly tested. In surgery, she was thrust into a high-stakes emergency: a stat cesarean delivery for a high-risk mother whose baby was in distress. The mother had been in labor for over a day with uncontrolled fever and diabetes. As the baby鈥檚 heart rate plummeted, her supervising physician made the call for an immediate C-section delivery.
鈥淚 was his first assist,鈥 Aza recalled. 鈥淗e looked me in the eye and said, 鈥榃e鈥檙e going fast.鈥 I was so scared. I鈥檓 like, 鈥業 can鈥檛 make any mistakes.鈥欌€
The surgery unfolded just as predicted: severe bleeding, complications, and a baby born not breathing, his skin purple with lack of oxygen. Aza found herself holding the infant, silently wishing him to cry, to breathe, to live.
The room was thick with tension and urgency as they called in the children’s hospital via helicopter. Though the baby was airlifted for emergency care, the emotional impact lingered.
鈥淚 guess my emotions were written all over my face,鈥 Aza admitted. 鈥淭he (children鈥檚 hospital) RT came, she said 鈥業 promise you the baby’s going to be OK,鈥 to the point that she had to find me on social media (to let me know) the baby was OK.鈥澨
While thankfully, the baby and mother both recovered, Aza walked away with a lesson she鈥檒l carry into every patient interaction: Composure under pressure can save lives.听
Through it all, she credits 国产主播鈥檚 MPA program for its hands-on opportunities, supportive faculty, and flexibility.
鈥(The clinical faculty) have been amazing,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey have been very responsive to my concerns. I haven’t had any issues with my current rotations. I’ve been pretty fortunate (with) the experiences I’ve had, in family medicine, pediatrics, and OB-GYN.鈥
Set to graduate in December, Aza is looking forward to crossing the stage with her children, ages 14 and 16, cheering her on. It will be her first time attending a graduation ceremony, and she鈥檚 doing it for them as much as herself.
鈥淚 really want them to be present and see that hard work does pay off,鈥 Aza added. 鈥淲hatever goals they have in life, all they have to do is pursue them. It鈥檚 going to be emotional for the three of us.鈥澨

Graduating as valedictorian of his class, Ryan credits much of his success to the hands-on learning opportunities and the supportive faculty that guided him through one of the most challenging and rewarding programs in healthcare education.
From Day One, Ryan knew nursing school wasn鈥檛 going to be easy. But the chance to apply what he learned in the classroom to real-life healthcare settings made all the difference.
鈥淚 had a lot of great clinical sites and I came across a lot of great clinical instructors and nurses at the facilities,鈥 Ryan said. 鈥淭hey put us in great spots, so I had opportunities to get my hands in there and be thrown into the fire.鈥
These hands-on experiences helped Ryan grow his confidence, sharpen his skills, and understand what it really means to care for patients in high-pressure environments鈥攌ey preparation for his current role as an ER nurse.
One of the biggest highlights of Ryan鈥檚 time in the BSN program at 国产主播 was the strong support system he found in his instructors.
鈥淭hey were always super, super helpful 鈥 super warm,鈥 Ryan recalled. 鈥淵ou could always call them day or night or send them emails or texts.鈥
Even after the term ended, many instructors remained accessible to him, eager to answer questions or provide guidance. Ryan emphasized how meaningful those relationships were, not just for his academic journey but for his overall confidence as a nursing professional.
鈥淓ven if you ran across a problem later, you could text them, like, 鈥楬ey Professor so-and-so, I have this issue or didn鈥檛 understand this 鈥 can we talk about it?鈥 And they鈥檇 find five minutes for you.鈥
Like many BSN students, Ryan had his fair share of difficult days. One in particular stood out.
鈥淚t was my first pharmacology exam鈥攖hat was one of the rough days,鈥 he admitted. 鈥淏ut you rely on those around you. Talk to your instructors, talk to your friends, and get back at it the next time. You just keep pushing through. You can鈥檛 give up.鈥
Ryan鈥檚 story is a reminder that perseverance and support go hand-in-hand鈥攁nd that no one gets through nursing school alone.
When asked what advice he鈥檇 give to students beginning the BSN program, Ryan kept it real.
鈥淚 knew it was going to be pretty tough going into it, and I think I was ready for that aspect of it,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here were definitely some challenging days along the way鈥 but to be expected. Everybody hears about how tough nursing is and getting through the school portion of it.鈥
Ryan recommends that incoming students lean into the resources WCU provides and embrace the team environment that nursing naturally demands.
鈥淢ake friends at school 鈥 don鈥檛 think you鈥檙e going to do it by yourself. Make friends with your peers, your colleagues, your instructors. That team environment? That鈥檚 what nursing is all about.鈥
With hands-on clinical training, supportive faculty, and a community that believes in your success, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at 国产主播 is built to help you thrive 鈥 both in school and beyond.
